Running from the past (closed)

Sean's secretary walked into his office and reminded him of the appointment with the new consultant. He wasn't that interested in meeting with the consultant, but the partner who was supposed to be there decided to take a couple of weeks off. As a newly appointed Vice President, the task of meeting with the consultant was dropped into his lap.

He got up from his desk and headed down the hall toward the conference room. He stopped and talked to several people on the way. When he arrived at the conference room, he opened the door and went in. It probably would have been a good idea if he had looked at the paperwork in his hand. If he had, it would have minimized the shock of seeing HER sitting at the table.

His mind went through flashbacks at mach speed. His whole relationship with Marilee went through his mind, including the text message he received from her as he waited for her at what was supposed to be their wedding. He stood in the doorway staring at her. His mind continued to race. He had so many things he wanted to say to her. Why would she take this position? She knew he worked here. It was a big firm, but not so big as she could avoid him. Of course, she probably didn't know he had been promoted. The promotion came from the fact that after Marilee left him at the alter, he immersed himself in his work, and put himself in a position to make partner in a couple of years.

"Really? This is where you decided to work?"

Two years worth of anger was pent up inside of him. It was all Sean could do to keep from releasing that anger and letting it spew forward. He took a deep breath in an effort to keep his composure. He knew that if he recommended getting rid of Marilee that the partners would go along with him, but he was not going to go there.

"No, Marilee, it won't be necessary to get anyone else in here. I won't run away from my past. If you can do the job, you can keep the consulting gig." Yes, he threw a little dig out there at her, but it was much tamer than he wanted to throw at her. He walked over and sat down across the conference table from Marilee. "Okay, run through the program with me. Let me know what you have in mind and I will make sure it matches up with what we are paying for."

Sean listened as Marilee went through each topic in great detail. He took notes as she talked and he made sure to give no visual cues as to how he was feeling as she spoke. He didn't even nod to acknowledge anything that she said. He was upset about who the person across the table from him was but he had to be professional about it because he was looking out for the best interests of the firm.

When she was finished he looked over his notes quietly. After a couple of minutes, he looked up at Marilee. "Thank you very much for your time. I will present this to the partners and someone will be back in touch with you about when we will begin " he extended his hand as he stood up. "Thanks again and have a nice day."

Sean stared at her as she asked him to wait. He did not respond. He had no desire to have any more contact with her than he had to.

He took her card when she handed it to him, but he did not look at it. Why would he? He didn't want to contact her. He would make sure that someone else worked with her on her project.

She needed to explain? What did she want to explain? What was done was done. He had moved on. Sean hadn't thought about her in a long time, and then she pops back in here. This was a plan. She wanted this consulting job to be near him....but why?

"I am going to be working late tonight," he said with no emotion. "Dinner is not going to be possible. Maybe you could send it to me in an email."

Sean took the information that he had on the consulting project Marilee was trying to get back to his office. He tossed the file onto his desk and walked to the window. Looking down on the town, he thought back to the way things ended between Marilee and him. Maybe he had been a little tough on her, but it didn't come close to the pain she had caused him.

He left his office and told his secretary that he was leaving for the day. Yes, he told Marilee that he was working late, but that was only because he wasn't ready to see her socially. The shock of seeing her in the conference room was more than he could take for one day.

Over the next few days, Marilee called several times. Each time, his secretary told her he was away. Sean had taken the time to discuss the project with the partners. Despite his personal feelings toward Marilee, Sean knew that she would do an outstanding job. The partners agreed with Sean.

While he sat at his desk, his secretary came in and told Sean that Marilee had called again. Sean looked up at her and nodded. "Thank you." He thought for a second, and asked his secretary to call Marilee back. "Have her meet me at McShea's at 7 tonight, please." As the secretary left his office, Sean picked up his phone and called the best restaurant in town and made a reservation for 2.
