The problem is with the assumption in the title that the assailant is a Trump supporter.

Would anyone assume under other circumstances that being attacked because you were wearing a MAGA hat means the attacker is a Trump supporter?

It was closer to attempted murder than assault, and apparently in Montana it's no big deal since he got a suspended sentence:

In that incident, Brockway pulled up to a parked vehicle, got out and pulled a gun on a family and stated he was going to kill them, according to KPAX. He was sentenced to 10 years with the Montana Department of Corrections, all of which were suspended.​

Brockway has been released on his OR, even though he is on court probation. I hope he gets locked up for a long time, but I have my doubts that will happen.
