Hey all -

What do you do with rude comments to your story?

I am all about free speech and opinions. I'm just wondering if you respond to them. I was brought up to "if you've got nothing nice to say...don't say anything at all." And constructive negative feedback - "needs polish" is fine. "This is trash" is not constructive. What's up with that?

On another note, I'd intended the story - "Rough Day at the Office" - to go into "toys/masturbation" but it was shifted into "Lesbian Sex." I am not an expert in lesbian sex (but really thought I'd focused on the toys). Does anyone have any comments/tips about that?

I leave negative PC comments on my stories if they focus on the writing itself. If they are stupid, insensitive, hate-motivated or otherwise, they are deleted.

No sense forcing anyone else to read such nonsense.

On the other, if you believe your story should go into a different category you need to PM Laurel (PM not e-mail). Let her know the details and you'll get your answer.

*laugh*

How can we resist that?

I think that the theory on the categories is that they use a "more likely to offend/turn off" rubric. That is, they put your story in the category that is most likely to turn off readers. For example, my story "Letters from the Hesperus" was submitted - obviously enough - under "Letters and Transcripts." However, it posted under "Gay Male." I believe that this was because they felt that "Letters and Transcripts" readers were more likely to unhappily surprised by gay content than "Gay Male" category readers were to object to a story written as a series of letters. (Ultimately, it was a helpful choice, as "Gay Male" gets a hugely larger number of reads than "Letters and Transcripts.")

As for nasty comments - I keep critical comments, but I delete anything that doesn't address the story or that resorts to abusive language. I think I've only deleted perhaps two PC's in total, but then, I don't post to the more hostile categories. Perhaps I should, just for the fun of it. ;)

Just to be clear (in case you don't know how) go to:

Login>Submissions (on the left side there)>View Current Submissions>Comments

This will allow you to see all comments on that story and delete any you don't want.

I go along with what others have said. I keep the constructively critical ones, but on my first story, a gay story, I got the useless and rude commend "Bum fuckers, yuck!"

I deleted that one.

Mostly, I delete them, like the "Absolute pants" comment I got this morning. If there were anything else to the comment, like- "You obviously don't know the first thing about script-writing" for instance, I would have left it.
One I kept though. It was so oddly written, and exhibited such a skewed viewpoint.. It was like.. poetry. I loved it. I still have that one up for public view, on my "Her Woods, Her Pleasure"

*burp*

If someone is going to prove that their life is far more pathetic than mine... then I'll leave it up.

When I feel bad about my day, I go to the comments page and think "Oh, yeah... but I'm not THAT pathetic!"

But that's just me.

Sincerely,
ElSol

Maybe I'm wrong...

I just leave them all up. I just posted another thread about the one comment I did delete because it was so long (6300 words). Other than that one, I find that if I ignore the comments, they don't seem to get worse.

The only downside I've seen is that I had a reader contact me and tell me they looked at the board first, then didn't read a story of mine because the comments were so mean. I was kind of surprised about that one.

That's a damn good reason to delete them. Of course it doesn't work both ways- I leave all the good comments up, in an effort to influence readers to try my wares :)

Bourbon, don't let the few losers and their comments get you down.

Personally, I leave them up so they can hopefully lend entertainment value to readers because the PCs are so dumb. But that's just me. ;)

In two years, I've only had to delete one comment. That wasn't even directed at me, but at the person who had helped me with the story. It was one of those 'All Faggots Must Die!' comments.

So, into the bit bucket. It's my story, they're comments to my story, and I feel I am perfectly within my rights deleting it.

It's so weird, too. I've gotten so much positive email on this story, then I look, see it is my lowest rated story and is called "Trash!" (And considering I've written stories with, well, much more explicit content, it also seems pretty darn weird in that respect.)

Oh,the public!

Thanks for the help all past and future helpers!

and maybe just maybe I need more lesbian experience....anyone? anyone? :cattail:

For ideas in writing about lesbian sex, I suggest you read anything by Colly (Colleen Thomas).

For more personal experience in that area, just keep hanging out in the AH.

I'm pretty well convinced that there are people who get some sort of pseudo-sexual thrill by flaming stories that arouse them. I know this is true in the loving wives category, where people read stories and then leave piles of excrement behind, as if that excuses their excitement.

It's very much like those people who get all hot and aroused reading porn and then convince themselves they're just reading it to see how horrible it all is.

Kind of a self-loathing act for sinning? Thus they can blame the story and the writer for arousing them, and not their own lustful habits.

Personally, I get the same response when I eat too much chocolate.

(Edited to add - "But I don't blame the chocolate.")

My opinion is that I did the work and I wrote the story. If a comment speaks to the quality of the writing, I'll leave it, good or bad. If it's a hate filled triad, I delete it. If the poster wants his opinion to be read, let him write his own manifesto. I'm not going to let him piggyback his personal manifesto onto my work, in the sure knowledge my work will get more reads than his crap.

Amen! It's the sign of someone who knows that no one wants to listen to him. And who would, if the lovely Ms. Thomas was speaking? :)

I'm sorry, were you saying something? I was listening to Colly. ;)

Dr_M:
I can even stand people who flame stories, even if they do it anonymously. If it gets too bad or too off topic, I just delete it. Unfortunately, the real damage is done by those who do not necessarily express their "opinion" in verbal flames, but in 1 bombs.

attacks

If a comment is a personal attack I delete it, everything else just fuels the fire of debate so I leave them...not that my stories have that many public feedback comments. I just wish they would leave their name instead of "anonymous". My favorites are ones that leave a pm with an email so I can ask them questions, I have found good and valuable friends that way and also received great advice that helped out my writing.

Let me speak out on my ability to be completely distracted by the lovely Ms. Thomas.

Huh? *blink*

Yes, absolutely! Some will write anonymously (this one did). Some will pm or email me, and some will leave their user name. Not that I've had that many comments.

I have had rejections; i do tend to write fast and impulsively, and have to make changes. I'm trying hard to improve!

maybe i should try writing on cough syrup today (hic!) it wil definitely slow me down...
