Royal Navy fires warning shots as Spanish vessel harasses US sub in Gibraltar

Flares??? *chuckle* What did he signal over the radio? "Alter your course or we'll open fire with Roman candles?"

...

Yeah. OK it may have been their job to protect any vessels in that area but I can't help but think that in times past few countries would have the Balls to fuck with one of our military ships, planes or Subs.

I was in Gibraltar in the 1950s when the Spanish tried something similar during a NATO exercise. At the time Franco's Spain was not part of NATO.

There were 14 Aircraft Carriers in Algericas Bay, a couple of Battleships, several big gun cruisers and many other NATO naval vessels. One of the largest Aircraft Carriers, an American carrier, had a radio message from a Spanish patrol boat accusing the carrier of infringing Spain's territorial waters during a turning manouevre, and would the carrier please lease Spanish waters immediately.

The carrier captain's response was effectively 'What you going to do about it?'. The gunboat replied that unless the carrier left Spain's waters now, it would open fire.

By this time, because the exchange was on an open channel, every ship in Algericas Bay and the garrison of Gibraltar were aware of the gunboat's threat. Several heavy gun turrets turned in the direction of the Spanish gunboat.

The Gibraltar Navy Port commander spoke to the Spanish gunboat - in Spanish - asking the Spanish captain to consider his options very carefully. "Many large calibre guns are pointed at you right now. I suggest logging the incident and raising it with the American Ambassador in Madrid. If you do open fire, the assembled NATO forces are required to assist an ally. The shells that would head for you weigh more than your vessel."

The Spanish gunboat withdrew. A protest was lodged with the US Ambassador but rejected because the Spanish and US versions didn't agree on the location of the carrier.

BUT - fast forward to 2016.

The Spanish still claim Gibraltar. With the decline of British military forces in Gibraltar, and legal arguments about the exact wording of the Treaty of Utrecht, Spain claims that the Treaty ceded the TOWN of Gibraltar to Britain, but NO territorial waters, so the waters around Gibraltar are Spain's - right up to the first inch of land. Of course the UK disputes that, but Spain tries to enforce it.

Thanks to the strength and leadership of the Asshole in Chief the US is now the skinny kid on the block who gets his ass kicked by every bully around.

Christ you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
The way subs are driving
They're going to flare-gun me

Spain wasn't really making a point to the US, just another irritant in their dispute with the UK over Gibraltar.

But they do have issues with the US over nuclear weapons since the US accidentally dropped three hydrogen bombs on Spain in 1966.

I know. And they probably have no knowledge of the US dropping hydrogen bombs on the territory of an ally.

Oops! Doesn't really cover that.

But Spain remembers.

Not true. Only Americans educated since the Department of Indoctrination...er...Education was established. The current Generation of American's are the product of the Department and they have done a great job of fucking up our children who are now adults and so stupid they don't know where Gibraltar is.

I know where it is, but I was educated prior to the great dumbing down of our children.

It's not just in the US. Last autumn a local school put some maps of the UK, Europe and the World on the classroom wall and asked the 11 year old children to put a pin where they had been on holiday.

Several had been to EuroDisney. They thought they had been to Florida - by train!

A beach in Turkey? Pin went in UK map for Cornwall.

Ibiza? Pin in Cyprus.

And so on.

Only 30% of the pins were in the correct country.

Problem is the Americans keep insisting you have to be an American to run the place.

Even the Brits had the good sense to get themselves German leadership.

Hell man, WE have issues about dropping Hydrogen Bombs anywhere we don't intend to!

Accidents happen but we don't like them involving radioactive material!

Did you discuss Gibraltar with anyone? It is a serious issue with Spaniards.

Imagine how Americans would feel if Cape May, New Jersey belonged to the UK and was a major UK naval base?

Of course public schools suck balls. Liberalism and the federal government have taken over our educational system in this country just like they do everything else. But the the blame for any stupid, fucked up children falls upon the parents of those kids.
