IC: Piers Trevelyan, 29 years old, 6’1”, 170lbs, short, well groomed, sandy hair and blue eyes - works for a large Swiss Bank.

I looked at the beautiful creature sitting on the other side of the desk and put on my most gracious smile. “If you’ll just sign here, Lady Alba.” I said, passing her the form with the space for her signature marked by a cross.

Lady Alba Agostina was descended from warlords who had risen to the throne of their small European nation through ruthlessness and the creative application of force. Her grandfather, however, had dipped his hand a little too deeply into the coffers of the nation’s resources, and that country now called itself a Republic.

Her family were still a part of high society, though, and none more so than Lady Alba (or Princess Agostina to give her her royal title) herself. She was part of the glamorous ‘martini set’, flitting between villas on the French Riviera, Italy, Monaco and the Caribbean. Her face frequently graced the covers of glossy magazines and paparazzi chased scurrilous rumours about her to sell to the tabloids. The family’s lavish lifestyle had not diminished, despite the loss of their kingdom. Nor had any of them demonstrated any great business acumen, blowing vast fortunes on disastrous speculations. The result was never really in doubt.

So it was that Lady Alba came to be sitting before me in the Geneva headquarters of the bank I work for. We were finalising a loan to the family for a very tidy sum at a low rate of interest. It was a generous deal - more than generous really, for we knew that, on its own, the deal would never make our money back.

Nevertheless, we had our incentives…

“I hope that you will do us the honour of attending a charitable function the bank is sponsoring tonight. I know it is short notice but your presence would be an immeasurable boost to the entire event.”

I forced myself to relax and not snatch the form eagerly from the bank’s representative. Instead I calmly took it, thanked him and pretended that there was a problem with the pen. There was no reason to appear over-eager. In actual fact we were desperate for this loan, and I was amazed that we managed to get such a good deal from the bank. They must be sympathetic, or else think that my family’s name would reflect well on them.

I signed the papers and it was finalised. I felt a great weight off knowing that our financial troubles where over.

I couldn't really say no, even though it sounded like a bit of a bore and I had no time to get ready. I gave him my most radiant smile. "Of course Mr. Trevelyan. I would be delighted."
