I once again had this discussion last night, so...How do you pronounce the word route as in "route 66".

Do you say roote or rowte (as in rowdy)?

I say "rowte" and I am constantly being corrected. Forget what the dictionary lists, how do you pronounce it in your part of the world?

Ok Mr. Gam,

You have reached your limit of "SILLY-NON SERIOUS" posts. The good threads run the risk of being bumped to page TWO! If you will back away from the keyboard, or point your browser to CNN.com, you will not be hurt. This board is a place for everyone, NOT just you silly posters. Thank you for your cooperation.

Both Ways!

Here in my neck of the woods,it is pronounced both ways.

That has a lot to do with where the people origially came from.

In my neighborhood that I live in,their are alot of people from the southern states, and a good amount of immigrants from Europe.

So if you come here someday and stop at a gas station and ask,"Can you tell me where so,and so is?".....you'll probably get,"Well you go down here to Roote 21,and turn left!"...

Or you'll get,"See that fucking road right there!....Thats Rowte 21!...Now get the fuck out of here!"

I would follow a roote, I would rowte traffic.

That's a good way of putting it. I will remember that in the future so I stop getting yelled at when I say rowte.

It's "root" 66, everything else is a "rowte", here anyway.
You know, maybe it's a regional thing, because the people that I know who say "rowte" are from SE PA, NJ, Del and Maryland. That area where the states come close to one another. The people who correct me all the time are from upstate Pa and farther west.
