Troy had just spent the last 5 hours debugging the latest platformer from game design and he really needed a break. 5 straight hours of doing the same two levels of a game normally did that to him, but especially a Platformer and especially one that had as many tiny bugs as this one had.
Firing up Field of War XII he logged in and was soon catching up with his guilds activities. He had started this guild with four friends a year ago, and although they had stopped playing he had continued to accept players, and now it was the fifth largest guild in FOW. The thing was it was probably the most popular because everyone helped out and leveled each other up. Daily runs were done in each of the major boss areas for every time zone and quest runs were well attended. Troy also kept his guild fees low. Enough to improve the major things but not to get all the shiny glittery things which were not really necessary.
Troy's own Avatar was StoneHenge. An all out tank character build he was there to boost the stats of people around him, soak up damage and heal himself. He had a pretty decent weapon but Troy had just begun to work on that. By the time he hit top rank at 99 he would be a powerhouse. At the moment he was only at level 80. Troy had been helping out too many lower levels lately and hadn't been doing many quests at his own level so he had hardly earnt any experience. Well maybe he could solve that tonight.
FoW was a cross between a first person shooter and a hack and slash MMMORPG. All the elements of a FPS were there. Different guns. Sights. scopes. Head shots could kill instantly depending on weapon, armor and bullet used. Camouflage and booby traps could be set. It was great fun. The other side came in in the vast world it was set in. The quest's you went on. The crafting skills you could learn(including how to modify your weapons and make better bullets and armor) the small amount of magic in the game (mostly to do with healing and concealment but some to do with speed, accuracy, power) and the special abilities you gained as you leveled up. Plus the path you chose.
StoneHenge was rocking tonight. He had joined up with a couple of other guys online at the same level as him in his guild and gone out hunting. He had a scout, two troopers and a dog handler with him. He was officially classed as Heavy support. His Avatar was 6'2" tall dressed in black camo with a large black backpack on his back. He was hugely muscular and in his arms he carried a small vulcan cannon. His face had a huge scar down the left side and his bright blue eyes peered left and right, constantly scanning the terrain for any signs of life. His close cropped black hair was echoed in the three day growth his face sported.
The small team had already cleared one dungeon with ease and were on their way to another. They had picked up some decent loot but nothing really noteworthy. Some they would keep and pass on, most they would sell and bank the money. As they approached a ridge the scout signaled a halt then called them up slowly.
"You might want to see this guys."
Down in the valley a lone figure was decimating a large group of spawns. Never staying in the same spot for more than a second she dispatched them with practiced ease.
"Damn she's good," Whispered my scout.
"Anyone get her name," piped up the dog handler.
"Nah she's got it on private, you need to be a GM to see it," mentioned a trooper.
"Well this aint getting us to the dungeon," I reminded them and we set off through the valley, the dungeon being over the next hill.
We were halfway across the valley when i glanced at the women again. She was looting the bodies but something wasn't right. Troy didn't know what it was that made him stop or yell out to everyone else too as well.
Of course the scout was too far in front and the warning came too late. The ground erupted underneath him and he was swallowed up in a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared the twisted remains of his body lay on the ground for a few seconds before fading away.
"Defensive circle now," Troy yelled into his headset.
The two troopers reacted with speed and closed in on him while the Dog handler took a bit longer to react and then he too fell in. As soon as they were close enough Troy began to cast his buffs. "Everyone Buff up quickly. I doubt whether she is finished yet."
As his buffs took hold StoneHenge seemed to grow a little taller and his muscles bulged out even more. This happened to the others as well but was not as noticeable.
"Scan the area, find her. Looks like she has gone to ground."
The dog was released and within seconds it had a scent and howled and pointed out a direction. A shot rang out and the pet flinched but they were built tough and had armor of their own and it quickly returned.
The troopers opened fire on the muzzle flash immediately while Troy kept a look out for telltale signs of movement his finger on the trigger.
A second shot hit the dog this time from the right and the handler returned fire. Hell she was either very fast or she had a partner. Troy was betting on the former. She didn't look like the type to partner up. Guessing about her plan he sprayed the under brush in a wide arc from directly behind them to their left flank in a rapid motion. No one should have been able to outrun that and if hit all camouflage effects should be nullified. The dog growled again and indicated behind before it's head exploded in a spray of gore. The handler gave a cry and charged off in the direction of the shot. "Stay in the group," shouted Troy, but it was to late as he waded into the undergrowth and tripped another booby trap. Troy expected him to come limping back for healing, after all he was a level 80 with buffs on but when the smoke cleared he saw the body disappearing. Damn just what sort of ordinance were they up against.
"We need to move," he said to the troopers, "Get to some open space so we can see her coming. Back over the ridge we came in through and back about 200 meters. It's all clear there. Stay tight to me and you won't loose my regen or healing buffs. Let's move."
They took off and within minutes had formed a triangle formation in the open space.
"Damn just who is this woman and what did we do to piss her off," asked one of the troopers.
"Just stay Frosty and we can get out of this," Troy said calmly. He had never met anyone who had come close to taking down his defenses and he was sure she wouldn't prove any different, but he needed to get his comrades out of this. Damn how was he going to do that and what was her motivation.
