Troy had just spent the last 5 hours debugging the latest platformer from game design and he really needed a break. 5 straight hours of doing the same two levels of a game normally did that to him, but especially a Platformer and especially one that had as many tiny bugs as this one had.

Firing up Field of War XII he logged in and was soon catching up with his guilds activities. He had started this guild with four friends a year ago, and although they had stopped playing he had continued to accept players, and now it was the fifth largest guild in FOW. The thing was it was probably the most popular because everyone helped out and leveled each other up. Daily runs were done in each of the major boss areas for every time zone and quest runs were well attended. Troy also kept his guild fees low. Enough to improve the major things but not to get all the shiny glittery things which were not really necessary.

Troy's own Avatar was StoneHenge. An all out tank character build he was there to boost the stats of people around him, soak up damage and heal himself. He had a pretty decent weapon but Troy had just begun to work on that. By the time he hit top rank at 99 he would be a powerhouse. At the moment he was only at level 80. Troy had been helping out too many lower levels lately and hadn't been doing many quests at his own level so he had hardly earnt any experience. Well maybe he could solve that tonight.

FoW was a cross between a first person shooter and a hack and slash MMMORPG. All the elements of a FPS were there. Different guns. Sights. scopes. Head shots could kill instantly depending on weapon, armor and bullet used. Camouflage and booby traps could be set. It was great fun. The other side came in in the vast world it was set in. The quest's you went on. The crafting skills you could learn(including how to modify your weapons and make better bullets and armor) the small amount of magic in the game (mostly to do with healing and concealment but some to do with speed, accuracy, power) and the special abilities you gained as you leveled up. Plus the path you chose.

StoneHenge was rocking tonight. He had joined up with a couple of other guys online at the same level as him in his guild and gone out hunting. He had a scout, two troopers and a dog handler with him. He was officially classed as Heavy support. His Avatar was 6'2" tall dressed in black camo with a large black backpack on his back. He was hugely muscular and in his arms he carried a small vulcan cannon. His face had a huge scar down the left side and his bright blue eyes peered left and right, constantly scanning the terrain for any signs of life. His close cropped black hair was echoed in the three day growth his face sported.

The small team had already cleared one dungeon with ease and were on their way to another. They had picked up some decent loot but nothing really noteworthy. Some they would keep and pass on, most they would sell and bank the money. As they approached a ridge the scout signaled a halt then called them up slowly.
"You might want to see this guys."
Down in the valley a lone figure was decimating a large group of spawns. Never staying in the same spot for more than a second she dispatched them with practiced ease.
"Damn she's good," Whispered my scout.
"Anyone get her name," piped up the dog handler.
"Nah she's got it on private, you need to be a GM to see it," mentioned a trooper.
"Well this aint getting us to the dungeon," I reminded them and we set off through the valley, the dungeon being over the next hill.
We were halfway across the valley when i glanced at the women again. She was looting the bodies but something wasn't right. Troy didn't know what it was that made him stop or yell out to everyone else too as well.
Of course the scout was too far in front and the warning came too late. The ground erupted underneath him and he was swallowed up in a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared the twisted remains of his body lay on the ground for a few seconds before fading away.
"Defensive circle now," Troy yelled into his headset.

The two troopers reacted with speed and closed in on him while the Dog handler took a bit longer to react and then he too fell in. As soon as they were close enough Troy began to cast his buffs. "Everyone Buff up quickly. I doubt whether she is finished yet."
As his buffs took hold StoneHenge seemed to grow a little taller and his muscles bulged out even more. This happened to the others as well but was not as noticeable.
"Scan the area, find her. Looks like she has gone to ground."
The dog was released and within seconds it had a scent and howled and pointed out a direction. A shot rang out and the pet flinched but they were built tough and had armor of their own and it quickly returned.
The troopers opened fire on the muzzle flash immediately while Troy kept a look out for telltale signs of movement his finger on the trigger.
A second shot hit the dog this time from the right and the handler returned fire. Hell she was either very fast or she had a partner. Troy was betting on the former. She didn't look like the type to partner up. Guessing about her plan he sprayed the under brush in a wide arc from directly behind them to their left flank in a rapid motion. No one should have been able to outrun that and if hit all camouflage effects should be nullified. The dog growled again and indicated behind before it's head exploded in a spray of gore. The handler gave a cry and charged off in the direction of the shot. "Stay in the group," shouted Troy, but it was to late as he waded into the undergrowth and tripped another booby trap. Troy expected him to come limping back for healing, after all he was a level 80 with buffs on but when the smoke cleared he saw the body disappearing. Damn just what sort of ordinance were they up against.
"We need to move," he said to the troopers, "Get to some open space so we can see her coming. Back over the ridge we came in through and back about 200 meters. It's all clear there. Stay tight to me and you won't loose my regen or healing buffs. Let's move."
They took off and within minutes had formed a triangle formation in the open space.
"Damn just who is this woman and what did we do to piss her off," asked one of the troopers.
"Just stay Frosty and we can get out of this," Troy said calmly. He had never met anyone who had come close to taking down his defenses and he was sure she wouldn't prove any different, but he needed to get his comrades out of this. Damn how was he going to do that and what was her motivation.

Troy had been standing in the open facing back towards the ravine. He didn't know who they were up against but he was sure it was only a solo player, but whoever they were they were damn good. It might have been fortune that had taken out the scout first but by taking out the dog next they had taken away their ability to pinpoint their position quickly. Most gamers forgot that. If the handler hadn't run off and got himself killed it would have re spawned with them shortly. As it was now, both the scout and handler were effectively locked out until this battle was over.

As he scanned the ridge line a grenade came soaring towards them. "Grenade, brace for anything." He turned his head and closed his eyes activating the earpieces in his helmet to dampen the sound. The grenade exploded and he saw a flash of light even behind his eyelids. Standing back up he began to scan the ridge again and then saw a muzzle flash behind one of the few trees up there. Raising his cannon he began to return fire. Fine if that was the way they wanted to play so be it.

"I want grenades left and right of the ridge now, I will cover the middle. Use me as a shield people, let's do this."

If they thought he was going out without a fight they were mistaken, and they sure weren't taking him out easy. Damn who was this and why were they doing this? Wasn't the game supposed to be fun?

Troy was astounded. This player was good, no actually they were great. Their build was phenomenal combining speed, accuracy and agility and the weapons she was wielding were top of the range. He was sure she was above them in level but as a group they should have been able to hold her off if not defeat her if they had been smart. Now it was just the two of them and with the way things had been going he was not sure they were going to survive.

"Okay activate all Buffs while you have the chance. If you have any landmines spread them out around you and stand back to back with me. Don't aim at her she is too fast for that. Try and predict where she might be going and aim there. Even if you miss you won't be wasting anything as you wouldn't have hit anyway. We have to find a way to slow her down. Even if it is only for a few seconds we can then unload on her and do some real damage. Do you have any stun grenades or mines?"

The trooper nodded and showed him a small cluster of grenades and several stun mines. Troy carefully thought of a plan while keeping an eye out. He knew they only had seconds before she would be back.

"Okay drop the mines all around you and be prepared. My regen buff should protect you until I get back to you."

Troy backed away and started to yell. "What do you mean I am slowing you down. It's not my fault you guys couldn't take orders. If you had it would still be the five of us instead of just the two of us. Well stuff you I am going, your on your own then. I will survive buddy but you are reset bait." Troy continued to back off slowly sweeping his gun over the ridge line and keeping his eyes moving everywhere.

Now it was a case of who was targeted first.

Troy watched as Reivers came back into sight. He shot just behind her and was able to hit her twice before she had blurred somewhere else. He noted the damage and was shocked at the low numbers. Damn. He knew his gun was under powered but she was either packing some serious armor or Buffs because he was hardly making a dent in her HP. Suddenly Troy had a thought. Why had she appeared? She was obviously in stealth mode and she had not shot so why had she broken out of stealth? The Trooper was still trying to track her and she seemed to be teasing him, circling him and stopping just enough for him to catch a glimpse and fire off a burst that she avoided with ease before doing it again.

"Check the ground, check the ground, She is distracting you. She did something when she de-cloacked."
Of course like all the rest the Trooper ignored him and kept on doing his own thing. Troy wondered why he even bothered some days. He looked himself and sure enough he spotted it. A little white kitten strolling straight towards the Troopers legs. He had never heard of such a thing let alone knew what it was going to do but knowing this player it couldn't be anything good.

"Check your feet now." He yelled knowing it was already too late. The kitten reached his legs and blew up.

Troy was Pissed. Why did no one listen to him. For fucks sake he hated teaming up with a new team. From now on he was sticking with regulars. Even before the Trooper blew up he had hit his grouped buff key and renewed them all. Good he was set for the next twenty minutes on his important buffs. His problem now was that he couldn't hurt this Reivers and she knew it too. He knew her next attack was going to be a full frontal assault. Grinning he decided to show her just why he was called StoneHenge. Activating his special ability as she came charging out he watched as he sank partway into the earth and a bunker formed around him. His cannon became a Turret and his HP and Def soared. Of course he just gave up all movement but in this case it didn't matter. The ground erupted around him and he watched as his health gauge dropped by a quarter. Then filled right back up because of his Regen buff.

Moving his Turret around he caught sight of her not moving. She probably expected him to be dead. He fired out a stun grenade and caught her in it's radius, then began to hammer her. He knew he would not damage her much, but it would scare her a bit. If he had a few more grenades and a better cannon he could actually kill her this way but for now he would just shake her up. He would give anything to see the look on the players face right now as they realized they were getting clobbered.

Troy was in his element now. He only had himself to look out for and that doubled his usefulness. His turret ability was doing it's usual trick of making him virtually indestructible especially when combined with his defensive and Regen buffs. The added benefit was that he had no rear to attack, so all of those attacks that added critical damage for rear attacks were useless against him. Also he had no head so one shot kills no longer worked against him. Most people thought this skill useless because it gave up all mobility, but Troy found it plenty useful against big bosses and World bosses. It also kept him near to the action and spreading his AOE buffs.

He watched his screen as the Reiver attacked him head on time and time again. He decided early on not to waste any more grenades as he saw how little damage he had actually done the first time. Damnit he really needed to lvl and soon. He had his next gun all sorted and buffed up several times thanks to a friend in the guild, but he needed another 2 lvls to use it. That was what tonight had been all about, but this bitch had thrown a wrench into that plan.

Ten minutes later he hit his buff button again and then went on to the open chat. Sure he hadn't hit her much but she really wasn't getting anywhere against him either. He had expected her to have quit by now. Time to find out why. "So we doing this all night or you going to admit you can't beat my defenses and give up?"

Troy laughed as the words popped up on the screen. Oh he had hit a nerve with that had he. So she was probably criticizing his build to herself right about now. It was always the way with people like her. If they couldn't beat you they called you a coward, but if they did you were a pussy. "Oh did speedy get her wings clipped," he typed back. He wanted her to do something stupid and then he could maybe trap her or something.

Suddenly his friend chat box lit up. "Hey stone what you up too?"
"Getting hit on by that ghost everyone is talking about. Her name is Reivers and she is damn good. LVL 99 and moves so fast it's not funny. I have had to go turret to survive and she is hating it. want to come and save me LOL"
"Sure let me see if I can get the gang on to it, give me a minute. Where are you?"
"Sand wastes. Line between dungeon of grax and fortitude."

Troy decided to keep taunting her. Maybe his friends would show up and kick her ass.
"So I thought you were going to show me something special. So far you haven't even got me down past a quarter of my HP. So much for Hot Shit."
God he hoped they showed up or he could be in a spot of bother here.

Troy watched her vanish. She had been taking pot shots at him and even trying a few melee attacks all the while talking trash and now suddenly she had disappeared. Something wasn't right. His instincts were screaming at him not to move, that she was still there and he believed them. Those same instincts had helped him on so many debugging programme run through's when he just knew that something was wrong even though everyone else had passed it in. 98 out of a 100 times he had been proved right when he found that glitch or source code that was wrong. Now he had that same feeling.

His friend chat box lit up again.
"Ok Stone the old gang is ready. Deadeye, Cokblk, Slshr87, Medicino and Vagilante are in. They will meet up with me at grax and we will head to your position. I just need to add you to the squad first."
Troy received the squad request from Glryhound and accepted.
His name came up alongside Glry's and sure enough he was 99. "Damn has everyone maxed out?"
"Pretty much. I think only Vag is left. She needs 2 more levels. I told you buddy, the guild is holding you back. Our offer still stands."
"I'm seriously thinking about it after today. Oh and I am pretty sure I am bait in a trap here so be careful ok. I mean it when I say this girl is good. Watch for mines and booby traps. Send Med to me as soon as its clear and we will set up a large regen field. Dead should be able to stealth it out in the background until we slow her down or he gets a shot. She is fast and I mean twice as fast as slash."
"Damn that is fast. Ok see you in five buddy."

Well now he would wait and see what would happen, but whatever it was he was going to take Glory up on his offer. He needed to lvl and fast and he could do that back in his old squad.

Troy smiled to himself. He might be able to pull her into a bit of a trap here. She thought he was calling in some team mates from his guild and she had judged them from the other players performances. Maybe he could play on that until his friends showed up.Of course she was probably littering the area with traps but it was just wide open space with hardly any vegetation. He would just keep sending Glory information until they got there and then see what the play would be.

"Ha when my friends get here they will wipe the floor with you. They will want revenge for what to did to them and won't fall for your silly tricks twice," He shouted out at her. God he hoped she bought it. If she thought the stupid idiots had decided to come back at her she would be rubbing her hands in glee right about now.

"Hey Glory, any way Slash can circle and come from behind her?"
"Was just thinking that. you are in a pretty open area but should be possible. Two minutes to we are there."

Troy had been so busy he hadn't even seen that the others had popped up in the squad grouping. This was going to be a damn good fight.

Troy had been in some pretty hard core fights before but that had been an epic battle. He had basically been a portable buff zone once the battle had commenced, being able to finally come out of turret mode, but it had basically been useless for him to try to keep up with the action. In the end he and Med hat sat in the one spot in the middle of the zone, stretching out his regen buff as much as he could. Med had a buff that basically doubled the range of it. At the same time Med frantically healed. Dead stayed with them in case she ever decided to take them out but with the buffs stone was putting out they were pretty well covered for a direct assault.

Slshr, Cok,Vag and Glry were the ones doing the main damage, with Slshr going melee Cok going heavy weapons and Vag and Glry going medium range on her. Thing was Reivers was just so damn fast. Slshr was the fastest toon Troy had ever seen up to now and he would almost swear what he was seeing had to be a hack of some kind if he knew it was not possible. The things this toon could do were crazy and the person behind it was damn good too.

Cok was the first to fall to a sword strike in the back of the head. At that time she was halfway down on her health bar, but still inflicting good damage. Slshr was the only one that could get into any long exchanges with her and he was doing some decent damage. Med kept him healed up and we tried to keep him in the regen zone whenever we could. Vag and Glry fought side by side but far enough apart so that a grenade or landmine would not get them both. When one got hit the other poured on the hurt and vice versa. Finally though Vag caught a backstab and was taken out. Dead had run in and seeing her health bar was low had decided on a stupid strategy. He went in guns blazing inflicting huge damage because of the buffs he had on, then launched his missile. The one shot never miss would follow it's target until it hit then stun for ten seconds. An eternity in this type of battle. With her speed she evaded it and killed dead but it had been lurking and as soon as she slowed for her next attack she was caught and then finished off. The XP they got was astounding. Troy ported with the others back to the nearest town and then logged off.

Damn what a night. Troy rubbed his eyes and stood up and stretched. One good thing about working in the computer industry was that he could do it from home. Walking over to his fridge he grabbed a cup of orange juice and a cold slice of pizza and then sat down again. Glancing at the clock he saw that it was still pretty early, only 9. He wondered what everyone was up to. Grabbing his phone he saw that he had left it on silent again. Damn he always forgot to turn it back to normal after a work session. Touching the screen he changed that quickly and then saw that he had a couple of messages from some friends about a party that was happening a few blocks from his place. Hell after what had just happened he could do with some alcohol and a chance to go nuts.

A half hour later he was standing in his bedroom deciding what to wear. It was a warm night and he really couldn't be stuffed going in jeans. Besides he didn't have any clean underwear and they chaffed something fierce. Pulling on a pair of long snow camo shorts and a baggy black T-shirt that hid his wiry athletic body he looked in the mirror. At 6'2" and reasonably muscular he didn't fit the usual modal of a nerd. His short cut spiky hair was colored red and tipped in yellow this week and his brown eyes always had that sparkle that hinted of mischief or so his mother said. His shirt had the old Gatchaman symbol on it and he wondered if anyone knew what it was from. Anyway he grabbed a six pack of beer and headed out his door. He would walk the two blocks and stagger home later.

He made it to the place and really he had heard it from like a block away. Troy greeted the guy on the door and moved inside directly to the kitchen. Throwing his beers in the communal pile he took a more expensive and better one and headed out the back. The place had a decent sound set up and quite a few people were there but his height and frame were an advantage as he moved relatively easily through the crowd. He was looking for his friends that normally spent the night on the dance floor but it looked like they either hadn't shown up yet or had already bailed. Well their loss he thought as he drank his beer and looked around. Seemed like it was going to be a decent night.

Troy had been standing beside the dance floor for a good couple of hours. he had met a few friends and had talked for awhile but they had wandered off in search of pussy. They would be lucky. As far as Troy could see it was just the usual crowd. That basically meant that the usual people would hang out with the same people talking about the same things and then go home and fuck the same person again. It was a big fucking circus. At least the booze and tunes were good though.

He had been scanning the crowd when he saw her. His added height gave him that advantage for scoping a place out. He could see over a crowd and so was able to see people a lot further away than one or two people. A teal colored head attached to a smoking body was headed his way. Troy hadn't seen her before of that he was certain. He would remember someone like her. A slim sexy body with small but firm breasts barely contained in a ripped belly shirt with a Purple capped mushroom with a deaths head on it. Gee that was a subtle message wasn't it? No double entendre in that at all.

She barged through two drunken idiots standing in front of him and slammed into him. Of course this turned out to be his fault. He was used to this from inebriated females. They were never at fault. He was just about to apologize when she uttered the unforgivable words. “Gatchaman sucks.”Troy couldn't let that one go.
"Oh and I guess you are a My little Pony Lover then. Should have realized that by the shirt you are wearing."

Troy smiled as the feisty girl came flouncing back towards him and bailed him up. He saw the fire in her eyes and he loved it. It had been awhile since he had had a serious argument with someone who knew their anime. When she had blurted out “Seriously, bro?”, loud enough for everyone to hear he knew she was purposely trying to draw attention to them. Well he was not going to back down because of that.

“You go straight for the Brony bullshit? With hair like that I'd say you are into a little clop-clop yourself.”Well she was going straight for the throat wasn't she. Well two could play at that game.
"My, My if that's not the pot calling the kettle black. You are the one who knew what my Gatchaman logo was and look at the logo on your shirt. No sort of double message there is there little miss. A large purple headed mushroom with a deaths head, hmm what could that mean?" He chuckled. "Who is trying a little too hard now. As for the pony comment I stand by it.Of course some of us can pull of Rainbow Dash, you of course couldn't even get Pinky Pie. In fact you would have trouble with Fluttershy." Troy heard a large oooohhhh go up from the crowd that had grown around them.
