Aren't roses gorgeous? Roses have started to bloom. They're only blooming in my yard in my "secret garden" which is on the southern side of the house and protected from winds and bad weather by a 10' hedge on one side and three sides of 8' fencing. The roses in the other part of the yard are just starting to bud.

I'm happy that this spring I was able to find 3 more "All American Beauty" roses and filled in my rose garden with them (for a total of 9). All American Beauty roses are deep pink and very fragrant. They fill the house with a wonderful perfume and will flower all summer through October.

My front door is covered with a climbing red (see AV). My porch is covered with white climbers (don't lean on the railing).

The first bloom will be out before the japanese beetles arrive. The beetles eat the blooms and from June-July, the flowers are mostly ruined.

Do you grow roses or do you just like to receive them? They are a pain in the butt, but they sure look nice and smell nice. What is your favorite?

I have a large rose hedge I've let naturalize over the past couple of years. It's about 15 feet tall by about 30 feet long. It's made of wild climbing roses.

I should send you some cuttings.

I've planted several. I can't wait for my Mr.Lincoln to bloom. It's supposed to smell lemony!

Mine has really taken off this year, finally. Tons of beautiful red buds on it. And I'll be able to see it when I look out every morning. I love it and I never get excited about flowers.

Mr. Lincoln is a good sturdy rose to have. With a little care, it should perform well for you.

My Barbara Bush took off like crazy and did really well. Unfortunately, the ex took it (it was in a large pot) before the divorce. I was left with a Queen Elizabeth that must not be in a good spot. It has always seemed puny and done poorly.

The locally grown antique roses have taken over about 1/4 of my back yard. They're so much more hardy and climatized than the patented tea roses....or maybe it's just that they don't need as much babying along. They just grow and grow. Strangers knock on the door every year to ask about them (they grow about 10 feet over the fence and hang down on to the street side) and we always tell them they're welcome to take cuttings.

I bet you have a beautiful yard!

Yes, I love roses. My all time favorite flower. I used to have a Graceland rose... it was an Elvis thing. I love him too... LOL. But it was a beautiful yellow rose. Big buds and big flowers. I miss it.

I used to grow them but opted for a more unkempt look with the flowers planted this year. I like more exotic. I love the beauty of roses, their soft and velvety petals but they are the one variety of flowers that I don't like to receive. If I am sent a dozen, I always give them away.

My roses are just finishing now. Attached is a photo of one of mine I took this year.

We don't grow any roses, but patient1 usually buys a dozen for me each week so we always have them in the house. I do love roses.

WOW! It takes a long time to grow those. They really ramble too. Are they the little white ones?

Mr. Lincoln is a big red fragrant one. I had a bed of those in my Philadelphia house. They make great cut roses too, and they fill the house with perfume.

Those Queen Elizabeth ones are usually very hardy. Might it be in a semi-shady space? Does the soil drain well enough. The big light pink flowers are really nice. I had five of them growing along a picket fence once and they completely claimed the fence (they were QE Climbers).

I'd really like to get more antique roses. I'm trying to curb my desire for more roses though, because they take so much time to take care of. I ripped up about a dozen last year along a fence, planted a hedge behind and put in a row of white crepe myrtle. Eventually I'll rip out the fence when the hedge gets big enough and then have a 'natural fence'.

It must be difficult to grow roses in Houston because of the humidity (and blackspot).

You're in the perfect climate for growing roses. Lots of sun, no humidity and good draining soil. You just have to remember to give them a good soaking once a week. Send me some of that great weather!

Back when I had lots of roses, 56 in my Philadelphia house, I used to collect the petals in a basket and made the equivalent of a 2 gallon potporri.

Do you prefer to get lillies or tulips? What is your favorite kind to receive? When I lived in SoCal, I had a bed of calla lillies, they are really pretty.

Won't you get about another month out of them or are you starting to get frosts at night? What is your favorite color?

i especially love pink roses :D

I like them too, both the deep pink ones in "All American Beauty" and the light pink ones of "Queen Elizabeth". I don't have any Queen Elizabeth ones any more though. The All American Beauty ones have nice big fat buds now.

I've had him planted for a week or so and he'd not looking too well. :(

Water once a week? If there's too much water, that's not good for them. It's been a bit rainey on the east coast so that could be a problem. I hope it bounces back.

I soaked the soil and area around him and whatnot when I planted. I'll let it dry out a bit and see what happens.
I'm in the Dakotas ;)

Any colour suits me, though golden/yellow are nice. Mine have finished flowering now. There are still some peoples around still. The weather has turned cold here this week.
