Rooting out the bad apples.

Being an American, it is easy to view reality through our bullshit glasses. Do you think police force employees represent the population as a whole? Or does the police force inherently attracts racist individuals? What am I asking? Where do we put our emphasis...is the training of our forces flawed in the training process unable to identify bad apples? Or should we be focusing more on kids?

I did a short stint with the Met as a Special Constable, stationed at Charing Cross.

The culture there was ... not the best, to be honest. It was misogynistic, laddish, aggressive, judgmental, intolerant, homophobic, racist ... all under the header "It's Just A Bit Of Banter!"

Since my best buddy served in the police (Greater Manchester), he's become a bit of the above too.

There's definitely a negative culture amongst the police. I think quite a few officers get burnt out by what they deal with; my experience has shown that they start leaning more right-wing because they just want problems to be solved, even if it is aggressively resolved.

I know the Met started trying to actively recruit graduates because they were hoping for a more ... tolerant new cadre of police officers. I don't know how much that worked because ... how many people want to deal with the scenarios that they police handle?

... I'm not sure if that culture will ever be changed, to be honest.

Do you think race matters to a high percentage of cops?

I keep hearing about bad cops and racist cops. What percentage of cops do you think care about skin color? Do you truly believe that people select one of the most dangerous carries because they hope it gives them a chance to be rough on someone with a different skin color? Do you think very many are good people that love community and are willing to put it all on the line for strangers of any color?

Just wondering and trying to understand.

Most UK police try hard to be tolerant. But when they get abused and assaulted disproportionately by a minority, it is not surprising that their spoken attitudes in private are not politically correct.

Expressions such as 'toerags', 'wankers' and 'arseholes' are racially neutral and in general use but when arresting a criminal who is not white is more likely to lead to police officers being injured, it is understandable that the police say things they shouldn't.

toerags... that's so 50 years ago, ogg!

as for the 'disproportionately' bit, perhaps it's something to do with their targeting, disproportionately, of certain sectors based on racial profiling or, more insidiously, systemic racism/societal assumptions (council housers=druggies/thieves/grifters/guilty) amongst particular regions.

i would still like to enjoy the belief that most cops are decent, regular, hardworking people who just can't abide the abuses leveled on some by others, and joined in order to help solve the problem rather than be a part of it. I considered joining, myself, back when I was a teenager mulling over what sort of career I might follow.

Disillusionment is understandable on both the parts of the public AND the cops trying to do their jobs the right way; edicts handed down and cultural leanings within forces can depress the best cops and harm the most innocent civilians.

toerags is still in use by our local police, maybe because we're in a rural area.

But urban crime is disproportionally committed by a minority and pretending it isn't is politically correct.

Obviously, the majority of crimes aren't committed by that minority, but they commit more than their fair share.

In our area, it is the various 'traveller' communities that do more crimes than their numbers in the community should suggest, but it is also several known individuals. In 2019 when one local man was sent to jail, the crime figures for our town dropped by 40%. He wasn't from a minority group - just a prolific burglar to support his drug habit. When convicted he asked for over 100 offences to be considered - all committed when he was on bail and wearing a tag.

If you fucking bothered to read my post, you would see my question. But instead you want to play stupid.

If the number of bad cops is proportional to the number of shit racists in the World, it says the only way to fix that issue is focusing on children before the mindset is established. You can't make a racist be not racist. If however, the proportion is greater than the number in the world....then the issue is the training process. I simply asked if someone from the UK had a view which it is.

I would think that n the UK police the proportion is LOWER than in the general population but the few get noticed more.
