It's possible I suppose, but it needs some further work. He'd have to be really - inexperienced and arrogant - to take on an entire gang without back-up. I have indeed heard of some huge rookie-cop blunders. This needs some additional element (not sure what yet) to make it plausible. Maybe they ambush him instead of the other way around?

There was a movie maybe some thirty years ago called Miami Blues that had many of your elements. No sex, though. But it was about a killer who disables a cop, steals his gun and his badge, and his false teeth (!) and goes on a fake-cop spree. Hilarity ensued! Your story could be equally interesting.

He could be undercover, but it's unlikely a rookie cop would be put undercover. So he's doing it off his own back, hoping to make a name for himself, going in without back-up. Alternatively, his more experienced partner is setting him up, either because he's corrupt and in cahoots with the gang, or he simply dislikes the rookie's arrogance and wants to bring him down a peg or two.

It's not impossible that a more experienced cop set him up; I guess cops are capable of anything. Personally, I have never heard of an incident of that type. (Sounds a bit like Training Day, but that movie always struck me as kind of implausible and overblown.)
One thing is for sure: if this guy lost his car and I presume his gun and badge, that is about the worst thing that could happen to a cop (short of shooting another cop by accident). His career would be over.

It would probably be better if he wasn't undercover, as it would be more humiliating for him to lose his gun, badge, etc, if he was in full uniform. It would still come down to him either being very brave / stupid, or him being set up by his partner, going in believing he had back-up when there was none.

I think losing the badge, gun, etc. would be a disaster whether he was in uniform or undercover. Check with your local PD for details.
Now in Serpico, in the tenement hallway scene, his back-up team does let him nearly get killed. But that is an entirely different situation. He's an experienced cop who is trying to fight graft, and the other cops can't abide by the threat he poses to their ill-gotten booty.

I grew up in a small town where a guy who never quite fitted in eventually came back into town as a cop. He wanted to look like the big man and settle lots of old scores, and the local gang broke his legs. Maybe that's the scenario, motivation and trigger, just instead of broken legs its anal gangbang.
I had been thinking something along the lines of, he's walking down a street at night, patrolling. He sees two guys in an alley making a drug deal and goes in to arrest them. While he's trying to arrest them, their friends show up and it continues from there.
I'd say make it a two cop thing, and they don't know what they are walking into in this like drug house. One can be a rookie, but the other only on the job a couple years. Their both not very big, average size. Their just looking for two guys, but walk in on 5 or 6 guys hanging out partying. They got porn video's playing, and the cops are surprised waking in like this.
