Are you the Master & Commander of your life, or a pawn Fate plays? Stories are one or the other: Romantic Self Determination or Naturalistic Pawns of the gods.

Do you punish writers from either camp? Sure you do. How come?

Both I guess. I have written stories here in ways that I knew would "go over well" give people what they want.

But I've also written stories that have upset a lot of readers and those are the ones I enjoy because they come out exactly as they were birthed with nothing added to them to "take the edge off"

Happy Mothers Day, Mutha.

I agree. I don't see stories as fish or fowl, I see mixes.

Hmm...I'd have to say a mix too, it can't be limited to either or. Also, I'm not really sure how it could be limited solely to "naturalistic pawns of the gods." But I'm fuzzy on what that means.

Whither control?

* Sometimes I control my life, sometimes I don't. (I do make great changes that aren't imposed upon me.)
* Sometimes I'm a pawn of greater forces, sometimes I'm not. (Those greater forces may not give a shit about me.)
* Sometimes the gods are *my* pawns -- that's why I carve new ones every couple days. (If we create gods in our own images, there must be some pretty ugly deities out there.)
* Everything I do is natural, because the unnatural (by definition) doesn't exist. (But we wry biological machines require periodic overhauls.)

Are you controlled, or in control? How do you know? Who controls the controllers?

You can control your life. In stories! In life you can only control how you react (act) to what occurs. Though I have witten both, I tend to favor Kismet!
