Mt Pleasant here, though I was raised in the hick town of Sparta, which is about 5 whole minutes from Grand Rapids. (It's only redeeming value, imho)

We just taught our 5 year old how to hold her hand up, and show people what part of the state she lives in. Told her that if she can hold her hand up and show people, then that means she lives in Michgian.

She is still having trouble grasping that Michigan is a state, and that a state is different then the city where you live.
