I'm an admin on another forum, which, like literotica, uses phpbb. TTBOMK, we can't make threads with defined membership, but we can make sub-forums. They can be set so that everyone can read, but only certaim members can post.

I thought Lit utilised vbulletin. There are ways either way, it's just if the Admins choose to utilise them and/or allow the members to, which is probably doubtful here.

True.

There are many add-ons for vBulletin including different chat programs. It becomes a matter of how much demand there is, what it costs and how much I.T. is involved to debug the integration. Some of the aftermarket stuff is very problematic. BTDT. I am sure Lit is a heavy bandwith user and these cause the main program to slow or even crash. We don't want that now do we? Maybe there are some new things on the market but this has been my experience.
