Will was a typical teen, in a typical high school, in a typical town in the middle of California. With no girlfriend, a lousy weekend job, and teachers who cared even less than he did, it seemed life could not get any more dull. It was time for a change, and the opportunity presented itself as soon as summer came.
Three of Will's friends, Hannah, 18, Nick, 19, and Erica, a 22-year old college dropout, came by his house one afternoon to make the pitch- they wanted to go on a road trip. Will rolled his eyes. This kind of spontaneous crackpot idea- a road trip to who-knows-where, with who-knows-how-much money, in who-knows-what kind of car- was just the kind of thing his friends would come up with. And usually, he was the first to go along. After a moment's consideration, he was in.
Finally, the day of departure came. "So, it's voting time. Which direction do we go from here?" asked Erica, once everyone was piled into the old station wagon she had borrowed from her parents. Hannah, who was somewhat of a hippie suggested going west, to San Francisco. Nick, the budding actor that he was, wanted to go south to see LA, and Erica had her sights set on heading as far east as possible. Will was going to suggest heading north to see the giant redwoods and go camping, but after hearing everyone, he wasn't so sure...
