Rising to the Occasion

And it did. :D

Oh yeah, I'm talking about bread, btw. It's been years since I last made it and my girls had been nagging me to let them have a go. We got in a glorious mess, but the results are good!

And the smells wafting through the house are delicious.

They're ready just in time for high tea. Drat, I should've mades some scones, too. :p

Dunno why I posted that, but I thought it might spark some trivial discussions about food again. Either that or your bad/amusing memories/stories when you/he/they/it didn't rise to the occasion. :D

I made sticky buns (the kind you bake, not....) from scratch. Sweet and gooey, absolutely delicious...washed down with cappucino...what a great way to start Sunday morning

Totally against my diet, but ya gotta live once in a while.

Oooh, I love having sticky buns, the feeling as it drips down...

Yeah, I was talking about the icing. :p

They sound delicious, Lime! A very fine way to start a Sunday.

S'ok, I've got some natural yogurt, too.

I've never had the balls to make homemade bread, as much as I love it, but I love to bake.
Nothing like surprising everyone with homemade cookies or cakes.

Making is bread is really easy, actually! Hey, if I can do it, anyone can! ;)

I love to bake, too, and I've caught the bug again big time. My lot will be sick of baked goods by the time the fad passes again.

I never pass up anything homemade, that would be sinfull. I love to make candies at christmas time, I'll have to send you my recipe for Milk Chocolate Bourbon Balls.

Not true! I have a "black thumb" when it comes to cooking anything that requires (or contains) Yeast.

I can't even bake an acceptable loaf from pre-prepared frozen dough -- although that's usually edible, unlike my few attempts at making bread from scratch.

I burn the bottoms too!....LOL....plus I have a new oven that tries my patience.

That's actually about the only thing I don't do wrong. :p

On the very few occasions when I've gotten a rise out a yeasted recipe, it seems to want to make up for all of the times that stayed flat and doughy -- Anyone else have a loaf of bread explode in the oven from rising too much?

I'm just the opposite, I've got no problem with yeast doughs and make some really good pizza, foccaccia, bagettes and the aforementioned sticky buns. But every time I try to bake a cake from scratch htay always come out lopsided - they taste good but they're ugly affairs.

Damn that Lou, I have the urge to bake now, I'm in the mood for an apple pie, my weakness is homemade apple pies. My grandmother made the best ones...and the smell in the house is like what my heaven would smell like.

I want to try Phyllo or puff pastry next....I feel daring. I love to make cream puffs.

I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade, but. . . .

I used to make my own bread for almost six months. That was after I learned that every bakery — large or small — used formaldehyde in the bread, so they could stock it longer.

Finally, I discovered that whether I made prefab (frozen dough) or from scratch, it was doomed to be made from flour that had already been adulterated with formaldehyde.

Note to Lime: Do you wait until the cake has cooled before you try icing it? I made that mistake when I was twelve. Since then, when I bother, no problems.

Ok, I now have indigestion. That'll teach me to eat it warm.

Very nice, though! Oh, and I nearly inserted a torpedo roll into my hubby, somewhere very painful. He took a bite, then started snickering. I quizzed him as to why he was laughing and he said he didn't know why, but he sudenly started thinking, "It's bread, Jim, but not as we know it."

He won't be getting any for a while.

Bread, that is. ;)

He's been profusely apologizing ever since, telling me it was really nice. Well, the dog enjoyed it!!! Hmph!

The kids did, too, bless 'em.

Lime,

When I was twelve, I made a Boston Cream Pie, but I wasn't patient enough, and it turned into a Boston Cream Avalanche Relief Map Cake.

That was the only Cake failure I have had, so when someone says their cake failed, that's the only thing I have learned to suggest.

Keep trying. When you learn what you're doing wrong, just think of all the bystandorial advice you'll be able to give..

All of these baked goods sound great. I leave the baking, breads, cakes, etc to my wife. She can do magic with them. Me? I do meats. Roasts, steaks, etc. Nothing like a good, hot, moist, piece of meat to really sink your teeth into. Stews, I can do stews, I can also do all sorts of wild game. (Although I do have to mention here the best wild game meat is not cooked, eaten raw, and is not fattening. Although if she's not careful there can be weight gain over the next nine months.)

mmmhh.. I just love the smell and taste of fresh bread.. My dad is a vicar at our church, and so we always have company on a sunday. Since I now live 2 hours away, whenever I can be home for sunday dinner, mum makes one of her wonderful fabuloso soups with bread bowls. She actually does the baking/cooking on Saturday afternoon, and just gently heats it all on the back of the stove sunday morning while we're all gone. Then we get home for dinner about 1 pm and life is good. Today she sent me home with six bread bowls and a huge container of her vegetable soup..

Any way. This wasn't really the non sequitor it turned out to be; I just thought it funny that Tatelou made bread today, too.

Sadly, the cooking gene totally bypassed me. (Actually, it sort of waved a white flag and ran off with it's tail between it's legs and hid.)

Hmf, high tea - you live in a palace or something?

I cook, but don't generally bake unless there is an occaission. Prior to my Grandmother taking cooking shortcuts  (we are too afraid to eat what she cooks these days) she and her sister would get together to make Hungarian donuts, which in memory are quite delicious. Anyhow, the last time they made them, and they literally made hundreds thinking that they would give a batch to each segment of the family, we went over to have a taste. We each had one, and upon leaving, Gran handed us a bag of about 6 donuts.

"I thought you said you had made hundreds?" My Mother stared at the bag.

"Well, they were so good," Gran answered.

Apparently the two of them kept eating as they made them! Needless to say they weren't in the mood for dinner.

Anyhow, the moral of this story is never rely on chubby, old Hungarians to bake if you want more than a small taste of any baked goods!

'Round these parts, we can find unbleached "natural" flour -- which I *think* is untreated with formaldehyde.

When I use flour (and I don't often -- since I live a low carb lifestyle), I grind my own almond flour.

Now -- the baked goods I can pass on -- but it's getting to be SOUP WEATHER!

Cream chowders, chili, hearty vegetable, crab ... Mmmmmmmm

Amen to that. Made a kick-ass butternut squash/carrot/beer soup over the weekend.

It's also well into canning season, and I haven't gone any preserves done yet. I might set aside this coming weekend for that.

I don't do much baking, except for my pistachio/bourbon christmas cake. Ah, cooking with alcohol. There's nothing like it.
