King Salidar entered the library. No one had seen his five year old daughter, and he suspected she could be hiding in here. He spotted her on the floor with a huge book. "What are you reading?" he asked.

"Oh . . . well . . . I'm looking at the pretty pictures."

His hand moved to the book of dark magic and closed it, then he placed it back on the shelf. "There are some nice pictures in that book, but it's one you must never read."

"Why?"

Because I'm your father, and this is my command to you, my daughter."

"How do I know which books are good to read?"

"I will place some of them on a small shelf near the floor. The rest in my bookcase, you will leave alone. Do you understand?"

"Yes, father."

King Salidar spoke to Allecta, who was now eleven, in his study. “You are forbidden to enter the library until my return from a royal hunt.”

She protested, but he would not relent.

Before leaving, he had a wizard place a spell on the library, so he would know if Allecta entered.

Upon his return, the wizard told him Allecta had entered the library. He called Allecta to his study. "Do you think you can disobey me and not suffer the consequences?"

"Father--"

"No, you will listen and learn that I mean what I say. Entry to this library is now prohibited. This is a royal command, and disobedience carries terrible consequences."

King Salidar planned to attend a tournament. Allecta had turned 18 a few days earlier. She was a beautiful girl but stubborn as a mule. It seemed every time he went away, she got into trouble. He told the wizard to keep an eye on her.

Salidar returned a week later to find Allecta waiting for him in his study. She'd broken into the library in the middle of the night. The wizard had caught her removing four books of magic and had discovered that she'd been using magic spells for many years.

“I'm sorry, father, I couldn't help myself.”

Salidar looked at the wizard and sighed. “Make the spell.”

The wizard said, "Unless you are bound to an orc for life, you will never use a spell like you would a knife."

“No one has seen an orc for over a thousand years,” Allecta protested.

“Allecta,” her father said, “leave here and never return.”

Captain Reed Blair sat in his cabin in the small ship. He rarely went ashore regardless of the port. There was nothing there for him. His only concern was the unloading of the cargo and reloading of a different cargo, so long as that went well, he would be happy.

His thoughts were interrupted by one of the seamen at his door. “Sorry, sir, someone to see you.”

Reed was puzzled, and when the beautiful girl entered his cabin, he couldn't imagine why she was here.

“I'm a wizard,” the girl said.

Reed almost laughed out loud. Everyone knew wizards were men. “Do you have a safe demonstration of your ability?”

A small ball of light appeared over her hand. Reed was surprised and impressed. “So, what does a wizard want with me?”

“I'm searching for orcs and seek passage to other lands. I can pay my way with the use of magic to assist the ship.”

“Orcs? You might as well look for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.”

“Will you give me passage?”

“Your magic will pay half of your passage.”

“And the other half?”

“You will stay with me in my cabin. Your body will pay the other half.”
