It is weeks after the outbreak, life as we know it is no more. Cities filled with the living dead or otherwise sit vacant. You must learn how to survive in the new world. If it isn't the living dead, bandits are after you for your supplies. Night time is a bad idea, no power no lights. Making it harder to see the dead among the streets. The military has set up bases but some have been run over by bandits.

Maci soon crawled back inside her little hideout before shutting the window. Sighing softly watching as the dead below roamed the alley. Brushing her brown hair out of her eyes before turning around. Maci walks over to the barricade on the door checking it over. She didn't need any unwanted guests as night was starting to set. Maci plopped down onto a mattress hugging her bat closely.

The twenty year was abandon by her uncle who was suppose to keep her safe. He dreaded the fact he was stuck with her and decided to abandon her. In the end karma caught up to him as Maci found is zombie body. Not even hesitating, ending his life for sure.

Edward stumbled on weary feet; he's been up for hours and the cut on his leg is not helping one bit. The wound was from a jutting piece of metal that he stumbled on as he ran from a horde of undead. His adrenaline carried him far, far enough to be able to catch his breath. It was then that he noticed the cut on his left calf, shallow but long. He raised his pant leg and poured a little of his precious water on to the wound. He grabbed a shirt from his pack and tore pieces off to use as a bandage. That was two days ago.

Now he fears that a fever is coming up, and he needs a place hole up. He passed a few promising shelters, but these were occupied by either undead or survivors not wanting to do anything him. He had even been threatened with a gun.

He turns an alley, surveyed the scene and proceeded cautiously. It has been an uneventful couple of hours but he needs to find a place and find it soon.

Maxi laid there on the mattress staring at the ceiling for what seemed like hours but only had been a few minutes. Sighing as she sits up before standing up. Looking down to see a man in the alley. The undead was making their way out of the alley. She watched carefully, seeing that the person was walking funny. Maci opened the window up a bit, seeing if it would draw the person to her. Knowing how dangerous night time could be. Time and time again Maci was denied by groups because she killed her uncle.

Edward caught movement up on his left. Did that window just open? he wondered. He stopped and stared, trying to see if there is anyone up there.

A low moan from behind him, from around the corner, around thirty feet from where he was standing. He shuffled to the side of the alley, opposite the opened window. He peered over some of the debris.

Two of the undead, shuffling and snuffling, had just rounded the corner. He quickly dropped down. Are they tracking me through my wound? he asked himself. The rags he had used is heavy with blood but he was sure he had staunched much of the bleeding. He peered once more. Both of the creatures were obviously tracking him, their wet snuffling loud in the quiet.

He looked up and there was a face, he was sure of it. He is sure he cannot outrun these beasts, but if the person up there can lower the fire escape ladder, Edward feels confident he can get away. Calling out at this point was a risk that he probably shouldn't take, but he has no choice.

"Hey," he said, his low voice sounding loud to him. He looked towards the undead but they appear to not have heard. "Please. I need help. Please!"

Maci watched before opening the window more. She slipped out before leaning on the railing. He was calling out for help and she thought about it. Maci soon lowered the escape and quickly took care of the undead. Crushing their heads with her bat. Maci brushed her hair out of her eyes before turning to the guy. "Follow but stay quiet."She said. Leading him over to the fire escape before climbing up. Waiting for this man to climb up so she could pull up the escape.

Edward wasted no time and climbed up the fire escape. When he got to the top, he lifted up the metal ladder and secured it. He turned to the girl, who looked him over and then climbed through the window. Edward followed.

Edward looked around the room. It was small. There was lantern, flame low, on the table. The air smelled of sardines. There was mattress on the wall below another window and chamber pot next to it.

"Thank you," he said. He offered his hand. "I'm Edward."

Maci soon shut the window after they were inside. She looked at his hand before slowly shaking it. "Maci."she said. Maci turned then sat down on the mattress. "You can have the couch....though how did you get that wound?"she said. She was could tell by the blood stain that is most likely was a cut. "Plus you should clean it and re-bandage it."she said. Before the world turned to hell, Maci was nursing student in her second year of college.

"Hello, Maci. Nice to meet you," Edward said, smiling a little. The hesitancy in his smile is a fact of life: trust no one. Ever since the world got turned upside down and inside out, it was hard to place trust in anyone you meet. But something in Maci's eyes, the set of her lips, the posture of her body, allowed a sliver of hope to open in him, that maybe this girl can be trusted and he may have found a place to rest for a while.

"I cut my leg as ran from a group of them bastards," he said. "I think the bleeding has stopped, but I have not feeling too well. I probably should clean it."

He raised his pant leg with a wince. The bandage he applied had been thoroughly soaked. "Do you have anything to clean it with?"

Maci listened carefully before nodding her head. She dug into her backpack and pulled out a small first aid kit. "I don't have much...but it'll help."She said. Maci tossed it to him then blushed as her stomach growled. She was out of food and had been for days. "What do you mean by don't feel well? Sorry I was a nursing student...."She said.

Maci shifted a bit as her stomach growled more. She was tired and starving. Her supply run wasn't very successful, as she only found a few bandaids.

Maci's growling stomach did not escape Edward. He unshouldered his pack, and after rummaging through he pulled out a couple of energy bars. He tosses both to Maci, deftly catching them.

"Fever. I think I'm about to get it, probably from the cut." He sat down heavily and pulled another bar out of his bag. He started to chew it and after a few bites said, "Do you have any water?"

To surprise, he shared his food with her. Maci opened one bar and nearly ate it in one bite. "No...but that his some peroxide in the kit."She said. Fever? She stood up and placed a hand on his forehead. "It's from the cut not being cleaned. Once the wound is properly cared for it will go away."She said. Maci opened up the first aid kit before sitting on the floor.

Edward felt something within him as he watch Maci, her back turned to him, rummage through her supplies. Despite the somewhat grimy clothing she work, ill fitting and with an odor that implies a good wash is order, Edward was suddenly very aware of the fact that this was the first time since three months ago that he has been around someone of a different sex. Quite unbidden though not unwelcome, he felt the beginnings of his sex hardening. It has been so long since he experience this that it startled him enough to let a sound much like a gasp to escape him. Maci turned when she heard this. Edward quickly started to undo his blood-soaked bandage, his penis suddenly hard and warm against his thigh. Maci walked to him, carrying a bowl, a bottle of peroxide and what looked like a wad of cotton balls. She go on her knees and looked at his wound.

Maci heard a gasp before looking at Edward. Setting the bowl down by her side. "Relax this will sting but it needs to be cleaned."she said. Maci wet a cotton ball before starting to clean the wound. She made sure to be gentle as she cleaned up the blood. What he didn't know, was that under her ill fitting clothes concealed her 36c chest. "Tell me if it hurts too much."She said.

Edward couldn't help but utter a gasp as the peroxide splashed on his wound, the pain bright and immediate. It did not last, however. As the Maci cleaned the wound he saw what he believed to be a good thing: a scab was starting to form.
He laid back and let Maci continue her ministrations and allowed himself to gaze upon her face. Despite the grime he can see that she is young, with gentle eyes and a full mouth, her Cupid's bow prominent. The lack of food has left her gaunt but not skeletal. He gazed at her hands, sure and steady, enamored by the way her fingers moved. "Were you a nurse before all this?" he asked. "You sure seem to know what you're doing."

Maci soon finished cleaning the wound before bandaging him up. She cleaned up the small mess before putting the supplies away. "Student...in a nursing program. It was my second year."She said. Maci walked back over to the mattress and sat down. "It's basic first aid...nothing special."She said. She yawned a bit before laying down the tossing him a tattered blanket. "You'll need it more than me. Get some rest."She said. Maci then rolled over with her back to him, hoping to get some sleep.

Edward did his best to get comfortable. In his opinion, this has been the most he's ever felt relaxed in a long while. So used was he to sleeping under the elements, not being able to fully go down the well of sleep for fear of being attacked. He felt his guard go down, and in the dark he smiled. "Thank you, Maci," he said. "For everything."

Maci smiled before drifting off to sleep. She was asleep as night was in full swing. Though began to shiver a bit as the undead made their way by the building. Before hand, she turned the light down more not to attract and guests. Maci curled up more around her bat, trying to stay warm.

Edward awoke a few hours later. He awoke with a suddenness born of months of sleeping in unsecured locations, of not being able to fully shut down. He was sweating and he felt cool. He thinks that maybe the fever didn't take hold.

He turned to where Maci lay, curled like a shrimp. He can see the faint glint of light on the bat that she held. Her breathing was normal and even. He crawled from under the blanket and got up to peer out the window.

It was still dark out. Down below he could see movement as the undead shuffled aimlessly, grunting and snuffling. He felt the urge to void his bladder. He walked to where MCi lay and grabbed the chamber pot. He then walked to the other room and started make water.

After he was done he dumped the contents of the pot into the sink. He returned the pot where he found it and went back to his makeshift bed. He rummaged through his pack and fished out a battered pack of cigarettes. He pulled one crooked stick, debated whether or not Maci would mind. After a few moments he decided to light it up. He took a deep drag and slowly exhaled, smiling as he did so.

Maci was still sound asleep but tears began to roll down hee face. The terrible nightmare she relived every night showed it's ugly face. Soon Maci woke up, sitting up immediately and panting. Her eyes darting around the room before she realized that she was okay. Looking ovee at Edward, surprise to see him awake.

"You smoke?"she asked calmly. Shifting in the mattress to face him. "Everything alright?"she asked. Trying to act as if she didn't just panic.

Edward stared as Maci sprang up, wide awake. His first thought was her instinct had awoken her. He listened and heard no cause for alarm. He looked at her face, noticed the sheen in her face that could either be sweat or tears. Years, he thought. Too cool to be sweating if that was what it was.
"You smoke?" She asked and almost immediately asked, "Everything all right?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," he said, stubbing out his cigarette in the bare wood showing through the tattered carpet. "Hope the smoke didn't wake you. I'm sorry if it did." He picked up the pack and offered her one.

Maci shook her head, "No...I don't sleep anymore. Its hard after what happened. Reliving it in my dreams." She laid back down on her back, staring at the ceiling. "I was left in the care of my uncle by my father. It didn't work out.......abandon in this hell."she said. Maci began to look her bat over. "The asshole got what he deserved. I crushed his skull after finding as one of them."she said. She knew that he may not want to leave after this. "He left me to die......only to end up dead himself."she said.

Edward was astounded at her frank recollection. He can emphasize with her feeling of abandonment, though not in the exact same way. If she decides she wants to keep me around, I'll tell her. Until then...

He gets up and walks over to where she sits. He stands there, waiting. She looks up, smiles, and shuffles a little to the side. Edward sits next to her. A few moments later, she leans her body against his, her head on his shoulder. He wraps an arm over her shoulder and brings her closer. No words need be said. And the morning found them like this.

Maci soon smiled before scooting over. She then rested against, placing her head on his shoulder. Her smile on bigger as she felt him pull her close. Eventually she fell back asleep until morning. Maci woke up and rubbed her eyes, smiling as she saw Edward. She gently shook him, "Wake up...it's morning."

Edward was a little slow in waking, no doubt from the fact that this was the first time in a long time he slept undisturbed. He stood up and stretched, feeling the tightness in his muscles loosen.

"Good morning," he said. "Hope I didn't snore too loudly."

Maci smiled, handing him a cup. Edward relished the warmth and was pleasantly surprised to smell coffee. He drank slow, enjoying the brew. Another first for what seemed like forever.

After a few moments, Edward turned to Maci and asked, "Listen, I'd understand if you wanted me to move on. After all, you know nothing of me."

Edward sat and finished his cup. "If you want me to move on, just say the word."

Maci saw that it has rain a bit as she left a cup outside on the fire escape. She brought it back in and madd what coffee she had. Maci handed Edward the cup before sitting back down by him. She shook her head, "You got lucky...your wound could've gotten infected. If you want to leave...go ahead but the company is nice."
