My family was dining in a New Orleans restaurant in the 1990s and he was there. Mom recognized him and got confirmation after approaching the table. He was on break from filming “The Apostle” at the time. I was just an adolescent then, so I didn’t really know who he was. But it was a nice celebrity close encounter, I guess, if one was a fan. I don’t think I was, really. Oh well, rest in peace just the same.

I do recall he had some great moments in “Secondhand Lions”, though. I recommend that film if you haven’t seen it.

I thought he was the perfect Gus in the TV version of one of my favorite books, Lonesome Dove. He could play a cowboy and he could play a New Yorker. A true actor who could inhabit and convince you in completely different kinds of roles.

Me, too. And Duvall might have been the most consistently good of that group. DeNiro and Pacino had great highs as actors, but also some performances I felt were too hammy. But there's no doubt it was a great generation of actors. Nicholson, too.

One of my favorites, too. It's a strange film, and it didn't get that much fame, but it's one of his best roles.

One of the nice things about that film is that it's one of the few to treat its religious subject matter without either sentiment or scorn. It plays it straight, so we focus on the character arc.

Gus is one of the best characters I've ever read, and Duvall nailed the role.

He made it to 95. Myself, I am happy for him for the life he lived and the man he was.
