The legendary Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, a major influence on Western musicians including The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, has died at the age of 92, Indian television said.

Shankar, who was the father of the American singer-songwriter Norah Jones, died in a hospital in San Diego where he had travelled to undergo surgery, the CNN-IBN network reported on Wednesday.

The Indian prime minister's office called him a "national treasure".

Ravi playing.

Ravi Shankar opened a lot of American ears to what we now call "World" music. :rose:

I had the honor of meeting him back in the 70's when someone I knew made a big feast-- first time I ever tasted Indian cooking, too. I was so impressed to be at the table with someone so august, but the truth was probably, that he was grateful for the meal, just as most touring musicians would be!

After the Beatles introduced Ravi Shankar to the world, my parents became big fans and not only bought and played his LPs, but also saw him perform at the Hollywood Bowl. I have CDs of his now, and was listening to the one he did with Philip Glass, named Passages, the other day. I am sure he will rest in peace, while his music lives on. George was probably there to greet him.

Yes, Ravi and Norah. Traveling musicians leaving little copies of themselves all over this world! Norah never got to know him very well, but she sure got his talent passed to her.
