HARD HITTING BULLET POINTS
The debate on the Patient’s Bill of Rights rages on in Washington, and the Republicans are doing a spectacularly hideous job of getting their message across to the people.

May I be so bold as to provide a few bullet points here for Republican strategists? Mix and use these points in your comments to the media. You’ll sound like you actually have some fight in you, and some of the great unwashed out there might actually understand what’s going on.

->This isn’t about suing HMOs. You can sue HMOs now! HMOs have been successfully sued for years! The people who are telling you that this is all about your right to sue your HMO might actually be trying to divert your attention from their true goals.
->For forty years the Democrat Party has been trying to engineer a government takeover of our health care system. Why would you not expect this Democrat legislation to further that goal?
->Do you really want the government to completely control your health care? When is the last time you visited a Social Security office? When is the last time you tried to renew a driver’s license?
->Didn’t you learn under the Clinton regime that the Democrats would do almost anything to fatten their campaign coffers? Well – here are some figures for you to consider. In 1994 lawyers donated $50 million to political candidates and parties. That was up to $69 million in 1998 and $124 million in 2000. Over 70% of these donations went to Democrats. Over 90% of donations from members of the American Trial Lawyers Association went to Democrats.
->One of the Democrat co-sponsors of this legislation, John Edwards, is a trial lawyer.
->Democrats are trying to expand the number of people trial lawyers can sue on medical issues, and increase the amount of money they can sue for. They want these lawyers to be able to sue regardless of the findings of medical review panels – and even before independent medical review panels complete their work! And, they want these lawyers to be able to sue in state courts were awards are traditionally higher! Why? To put more money in trial lawyer pockets! This will naturally result in more money for Democrat campaigns!
->The last thing the Democrats want is for people to actually take responsibility for their own medial care. People who rely on themselves and who buy private insurance policies are people who don’t need bigger government. People who don’t need bigger government don’t vote for Democrats.
The Democrats killed an amendment that would allow individual -->Americans to deduct the cost of private health insurance policies. They’re perfectly content to allow businesses to deduct that cost, however. Why? Because Democrats want citizens to be dependent on someone else for their health insurance policies. That dependency can easily be transferred from the employer to the government.
->Democrats know that provisions allowing employees to sue their employers will cause some – or many – employers to drop their health insurance programs. Employers don’t want to jeopardize the very future of their business just to provide health insurance. This is just fine with Democrats. This is what they want! These employees will immediately start screaming for the government to step in and do something! That is music to leftist ears.
->Democrat strategists probably already have press releases drawn up to be used in the 2002 congressional elections. The releases will decry the loss of employee benefit health insurance policies for millions of Americans and will press the need for a government health care system to address this “crisis.”
->If Democrats really wanted to improve the delivery of health care to individual Americans they would make it easier for individual Americans to buy health insurance policies tailored to their needs. Ask yourself, why aren’t they doing this? There’s one answer – because Democrats DON’T want to make it easier for you to assume the responsibility for your own health care. They want you to beg the government to step in – and they’re just itching to come to the rescue.
