On one of my trips to the store today I decided to take a bit of a detour. I wanted to relax a bit and just be on my own. I cranked north for a bit then shifted West to hit the main road heading south. This would make it a ten mile ride.
As I pulled onto the main road and cranked it up to speed I glanced in my mirrors. I could see multiple single lights behind me and knew they were bikes. At the nesxt light they came up to me and I found myself mixing it up with five motor officers.
They looked at me sitting there on my dinosaur wearing a denim jacket with a leather vest and full faced helmet. I looked at them cool and comfortable in their short sleeved shirts over ballistic vests and their short helmets. They nodded at me and I nodded back.
The light turned green and we all cranked it on. They rolled past me because I wasn't going to let the bike run with them around me. I watched as they pulled into a staggered formation ahead of me then smiled as Tail End Charlie waved at me to join up. I cranked it up and fell into the formation.
So here I am running number six with a crew of motor officers and loving life. These guys know how to ride and I'm keeping up without a quiver. I'm loving it.
Then we come up on my turn off. It's a right hand turn and I hit my signals with plenty of time. Then I notice the guys I'm with hitting their signals as well. Here's where I learn just how good these guys are. Without a signal they shift into singel line and come up on the turn. They aren't slowing and I'm getting nervous. Then the brake lights come on and these guys are all taking the same line into the turn. I follow them, I hit my brakes where they do and lean into the turn where they do. I'm on the gas much earlier than I'm used to and my bike powers through the turn. I pull into their formation as I straighten up and I'm smiling behind my helmet.
We do another couple of miles then I hit the signal to pull off. This is my destination. I peel off and nail the damned turn like I haven't done before. I pull into the parking lot and park the bike. As I'm walking towards the store here comes one of the cops with a smile on his face. He stops in front of me and tells me I did good as he hands me his card. He wants to teach me to ride like they do.
Oh man what can I say? I fully intend to learn from this guy and his co-workers. These guys are the absolute best riders, if you doubt me just look for a video of them on U-Tube.
