Throughout my entire childhood, my father entertained me with stories of my ancestors that had fought in the Civil War. Being raised in a Southern family, deep in the heart of South Carolina, this was a point of pride. After my first year at college, I decided to escape home and visit the path that several of my family members had followed during the War. I would begin my trek in Richmond, pay homage to the statues of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson, then visit the various battlefields scattered around Virginia and Maryland...including the one where my great-great-great-great grandfather had fallen to a minne ball.

Driving into Richmond, I decided to check into a hotel room and let my journey begin the next day. I paid for a room at the Crown Plaza, which was somewhat expensive but well worth the extra money. Signing my name on the receipt...Forrest Johnson...I sought out the elevator. The room had a marble bathroom, marble desk, and large bed that looked as if it would completely envelope whoever lay in it. The summer heat didn't forgive me for wearing khaki pants and a polo shirt, and I thanked God for making me wear flip-flops in place of deck shoes. Without even bothering to change, I took advice from the desk clerk and sought out a resteraunt several blocks away. Luckily the heat had vanished with the sun, and I found that it was rather comfortable outside.
