i do understand the need for rules and security at our nation's airports but would you please just give me a fucking break. over the weekend a major airport in cincinatti i think, was evacuated when a man was caught trying to smuggle a cigar cutter onto a plane in his sock.

let me just picture this....he breaks down the cabin door, grabs the pilot by the wrist, slips the cutter over the pilot's little finger and yells, "take me to cuba or pinky dies".

jeeze...

ok, i'm gonna keep bumpin' this until i get at least one, "i feel your pain unclej".

No sympathy from this quarter. Those things don't inconvenience you, I suppose. Not really. Try to imagine others who aren't so fortunate as you. Their lives have been turned upside down. So a little delay at the airport is a minor thing, relatively speaking.

I'm with April. As long as they don't come up with some way to truly invade our privacy (not just our ability to carry certain items on a plane), I don't think having delays at airports is a big deal, either. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Frustrating? Yes, it certainly can be. Unnecessary? Perhaps. Safer than it was when hijackers got on the plane? I think so, and that's worth it to me. I don't want to worry about my plane being used as a bomb when I go to England this summer, and I feel a hell of a lot safer with all these new precautions.

UncleJ, I feel ya man............but I would rather be inconvienced and be safe than to be convenient and be dead.

Reminds me of a woman who was busted not too long ago in Traverse City....apparently she got on the plane in Georgia carrying among other things, a pocket knife, a box cutter, and a 1/2 pound rock.
She went to leave Michigan on a plane and was stopped and couldn't understand why. And then said she knew nothing of the security measures that have been taking place all over the world.
I can deal with the fact that some people are just stupid. But my question is what the hell was she going to do with that rock?

start a fire on the plane by banging her knife against it??? LOL :D

I'd be much more amenable to being inconvenienced if there was any indication that there was some rational thought behind what was causing the delays.

I se two types of stories on the new security precautions:

Stories like this, where something pretty innocent is treated as if it were a deadly weapon and it's owner treated like a terrorist simply for wanting to take it on the plane with him.

OR

Stories about people who turn over their handgun to a flight attendant in mid-flight because the "forgot they had it with them"; News people who successfully smuggle all sorts of dangerous items past security to "test" security; baggage scanners found unplugged for long periods of time (after flights have already left with passengers "cleared" by the machine); etc.

I have little confidence that the security at all airports is run by intelligent beings. I'm sure there are some efficient and effective security setups, but I sure haven't read about any of them.

Edited to add the news story on this.

Traverse City Record Eagle

Woman arrested for weapons at airport
TRAVERSE CITY - Police have arrested a Georgia woman who tried to board a jet carrying three knives, two box cutters, pepper spray and a half-pound rock.
Police say Alice Annette Voils, 35, of Senoia, passed through at least one checkpoint at Cherry Capital Airport without being stopped by security, and she claims to have carried the weapons through security checkpoints at Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport during her trip from Georgia to Michigan.
Voils was charged Wednesday with carrying weapons into a secure airport area. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
She was stopped at a random security checkpoint at Cherry Capital Airport at around 5 p.m. Tuesday as she attempted to board a Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit after she had already cleared the airport's main security checkpoint.

Weird Harold,

I agree with what you said also.........not so sure that the "security" isn't being run by complete ignoramus' sometimes.

I mean what is someone going to do with a cigar cutter? Kinda like unclej said "Take me to cuba or pinkie dies!" I mean wtf?

Though I understand that they don't want any possible "weapon" on a plane and I can understand that and all, but a cigar cutter? C'mon give me a break.........

roxie ~ I am glad you got my lil joke in there..........
