This is New York City, the city that never sleeps, the Big Apple. Whatever else you want to call it it’s the greatest city in the world; at least the people of the city think so. This is the place where weird stuff happens everyday and nobody seems to notice. It is the place where the murder rate is so high that nobody seems to give a damn if it happens again. That was until something strange started to happen, something stranger than most. It all happened just a few weeks ago when a hospital was quarantined for some unknown reason. That in itself was strange or so I thought but then came the reports from the hospital itself of a strange disease running rampant through it; a disease that was killing everyone within its walls. I thought that they were just rumors themselves but every time I tried to get near the hospital I was told in no uncertain terms to get the hell out of there. It was then that the rumors started to get more and more peculiar and one of my contacts told me that the dead seemed to be rising. I thought that it he was crazy, but then more stories came to me of the dead coming to life.
I myself think that I am going crazy but I tell you the truth now. I have actually seen this happen. I actually saw one of these, I won’t call them zombies as that seems a little too clichéd get up from an autopsy table and attack the person that was closest to it. I was glad that there were police officers there in the room with me or I would not be telling you this right now. I am not afraid to say this to you but I ran as fast as I could from that room.

Daniel Jefferies raised his hands off his typewriter, pulled off his glasses and rubbed his eyes with his fingers. As he looked down at the paper he still couldn’t believe that he was typing something like this and hoped that when he was finished there would still be people out there to read it. Whatever had come out of that hospital was killing more and more people every day and he wished that they would stay dead. His next door neighbor had complained to him about a bite that he had received from a crazy man a couple of days ago. When Daniel had gone to check on him that morning he found that the door had been ripped off its hinges and something had escaped from the room. It was when that he heard the screams from the apartment two doors down he ran into his apartment, hoping that the door was going to stop whatever it was from coming through.

He then looked over at the pistol that sat next to him and hoped that it would be enough. He had seen the cops shot the man that had risen from the autopsy table at least twelve times and he had still come towards them. He slowly got up from his chair and walked to his window. As soon as he opened it the first thing that came to him was the scream from down on the street. That in itself was normal for him as he had lived in this city for almost all of his life but when he looked down he saw a man biting into a woman’s neck. Daniel’s first thought was to scream out for the man to stop but it was then that the man dropped the woman and raised his head. Daniel’s mouth dropped open when he looked into the face of his old neighbor.

Daniel moved away from the window and shut it as fast as he could then sat back down and looked back at the window.

“What the fuck is going on here?” he said to himself.

Miranda had just stepped through the threshold of her cramped one bedroom apartment after a long fifteen hour shift. There had been so many that had come in with bite and scratch marks. Nobody told her anything and any cop she asked was tight-lipped. Thankfully it was all over for a day. She dropped her bag and purse on the floor and bumped the door shut with her hip before walking over and crashing face first into her suede sofa.

Not five seconds later her intentions of sleep were interrupted as her phone rang. She ignored it at first, but then her cell phone and pager both went off as well and she knew that meant only one thing. She was getting called back in. Begrudgingly she picked up the phone and with a sigh prepared for the inevitable.

“Hello?”

“Mira? It’s Sophie, yeah I’m really sorry to do this but we’re going to need you to come back in.” The young woman’s voice regretfully uttered. Mira took a moment before responding.

“I just worked fifteen hours can’t Dana or Jacob cover it?”

“Jacob’s here, we can’t get a hold of Dana. Oh… sir… sir are you alright? Wait sir, you’re going to have to go sit and wait to see a doctor… sir… sir you’re not allowed back here… oh sorry Miranda look I have to go, please just hurry.” Before Miranda could reply Sophie had hung up. She let out another sigh before hanging up herself and walking back to the door, her feet dragging beneath her as she hefted her bag and purse and shutting off the light once again left the apartment.

Mira climbed into her SUV and pulled out of the apartment building’s parking lot. Speeding down the street towards the hospital it was now in sight but also in sight was the flashing lights of a police cruiser in her rear-view mirror. She pulled over, rolling down her window as she waited and the officer walked up to her door.

“I’m sorry officer I know I was speeding but I’m a doctor you see and they really need me down at the hospital and…” She was cut off mid-ramble.

“Sorry ma’am. Doctor or not you ain’t goin’ near that hospital. It’s been quarantined. You’re going to have to turn around.” She looked at him in shock, what had happened in the hour she was away?

“Quarantined? What’s going on?” She managed to ask as a million other questions rattled in her head.

“The situations being handled, you just go on home and lock up.” He patted the side of her window twice before heading back to his cruiser. Miranda waited until he left before pulling a u-turn and heading back home. As she passed through an intersection another car came speeding through and smashed her front end. Her air-bag ejected though she was unharmed. She fought her way out of her seatbelt and the airbag, slipping out of the SUV she saw the passenger of the speeding car sprawled on the hood, obviously dead. The passenger door was nowhere to be seen and the driver lay dead against the steering wheel. She quickly pulled out her cell phone and dialed 911 but was put on hold. She tried dialing a couple hospitals but was unable to get through to anyone. Miranda resorted to the only option she had left.

“Help! Somebody! Somebody help me! Please!” She hollered into the empty streets.

Daniel sat there for a second and knew that he had to go out there but part of him still thought it was the worst thing that he could do. He was safe as long as he was in his home; at least whatever his neighbor had been turned into wouldn't be able to get him here. He slowly got up off his chair, walked to the window and looked down at the street again but this time he saw that it was empty. It was as if he had been seeing a hallucination the first time. He knew that he hadn't but it made him wonder if he was going crazy, especially with what he had seen in the morgue. That image still stayed with him and he hoped that he would be able to get it out of his head soon. He knew though that it would take a lot to make that happen.

Just then there was a loud knocking on the door and as Daniel turned to look at it it started to get louder, as if someone wanted to get into his place. He walked over to where his pistol sat on the table and looked at the door just as the banging against the wood started to get louder. Daniel opened his mouth to ask who was there but found that his voice would not even come; it was as if something had stolen it from him. Just then the banging on the door got even louder and Daniel knew that someone was out there, trying to get to him.

"Who's out there! What do you want with me!"

The banging on the door began to get louder and as he looked at it Daniel knew that there was no way it was going to hold up under the constant onslaught whoever was out there was putting it under. He turned his head slowly and looked towards the window and hoped that, if worse came to worse that he would be able to make it to the fire escape before whatever it was crashed through the door.

It was then that he heard a splintering sound and turned to look at the door just to see that it was beginning to move against its hinges. He watched wide eyed as the door began to move inwards, just as his neighbor's door had and he wondered just who the hell was out there. He gripped the pistol tighter in his hand as he looked at the door and called out, "Get away from the door! I have a gun in my hand and I am not afraid to use it!"

All that he got as a reply from the other side of the door was a loud groaning seconds before the banging started again. Daniel slowly raised his pistol and looked at the door, "This is your last chance. If you don't back away now I will be forced to shoot."

The banging against the door didn't cease so Daniel squeezed the trigger on his pistol and watched as the bullet splintered the wood of the door. He heard a loud groan as he bullet struck whoever was out there but seconds later the banging started again. Daniel's eyes widened and he realized one thing, that there would be no stopping whoever was out there. They were going to get through, they were that determined. He turned quickly and knew that there was only one way he could go. Out of the window. He just hoped that it wasn't going to hurt too much as he ran as fast as he could towards it.

Just as the window shattered around him Daniel heard the door splinter behind him and he turned just to see his neighbor standing there, a maniacal look on his face. Daniel opened his mouth to say something to him but before he could his neighbor, Mr Jacobs ran straight at him. Daniel knew that there would be no time to talk to him and fired straight into Mr Jacobs' body, watching in disgust as the bullet ripped straight through him to slam into the wall behind. His disgust turned to shock though when he realized one thing, the bullet hadn't stopped his neighbor who was still coming towards him.

Daniel looked down the ladder below him and ran towards it just as Mr Jacobs lunged at him. He just hoped that there wasn't anything like Mr Jacobs down on the street.

As soon as he got to the street Daniel looked around him and noticed that the place looked deserted. That in itself wasn't so strange but it was though there had never been people there in the first place. He stood there for a second and tried to think of what he was going to do next but when he heard the crash above him he looked up just to see that Mr Jacobs was already on the catwalk looking down at him. He knew that there was no way he could stay here or Mr Jacobs was more than likely to come down and finish off what he had started in his apartment.

He looked down the street and decided that he might as well make a run for it while he still could so as soon as he slid his pistol into his belt he started to run away from his apartment. As soon as he did though he was shocked to hear the scream of pain and anger behind him, closely followed by another one. His first instinct was to look back and see who or what had made that sound but he knew that it was the worst choice that he could make and just kept running. Something told him that it was the only way he was going to make it out of there alive.

As soon as he made it out into the street he was surprised to see that everything around him was the same. Where there should have been cars and people there was nothing. It was as though something had come along while he had been in his apartment and just wiped away all the human population of the city. It was then that he heard a person crying out for help though and thanked god that he wasn't alone before he started to run towards it.

As soon as he came upon the SUV Daniel saw the woman standing in front of it, obviously dazed as a result of the accident. He walked towards her quickly and raised his hands.

"I am not going to hurt you miss but I do need to know what happened. Can you tell me your name and where you just came from."

God, he hoped that he didn't sound like a cop from one of those cheesy shows.

“I… I..” She didn’t realize how dizzy she was feeling until the man had come up to her. She took a moment to center herself before looking up at him.

“My name’s Miranda, I.. I’m a surgeon at New York General, I was just in an accident. They… they just sped through the intersection… I… I couldn’t move…” Another dizzy spell took her and she leaned back against her SUV.

“I think… I think they were swerving. But… but the passenger didn’t have a seatbelt on and…. I.. I don’t see the passenger door…” She pushed herself away from the SUV and a bit dazed, stumbled over to the other car.

“This isn’t right. See… see his neck. It looks like someone took a bite out of it. I’ve seen it before and there’s no way he got that wound from this accident. Maybe they were going to the hospital? I.. just… I’m feeling dizzy… I need to sit down for a moment.” She quietly informed him as she went back to her SUV and sat down in the driver’s seat.

Danny O'Doherty sat in his usual booth at Sully's, watching the news of strange happenings at the hospital. He wasn't alone, Jimmy and Michael O'Connell were sitting at the bar having a pint, when there was a resounding crash through the glass door of the pub.

"Jaysus Fuckin' Christ Tommy! Whats the matter with you lad?" Jimmy asked, then in a moment Tommy had latched onto Jimmy's neck with his teeth.

Danny shot up from his seat and in a moment a .50 cal pistol was in his hand, Michael leapt onto Tommy, who released a screaming Jimmy, who fell to the floor.

"Christ! JIMMY!" Michael yelled before screaming in pain as Tommy turned and bit him as well.

"FUCK!" Danny yelled before pulling the trigger, and unloading into Tommy. One shot would have dropped any man.

Tommy dropped Michael and came at Danny.

"FUCKIN' HELL!" in a moment Tommy was almost on him, and Danny leaned back and caught him a square boot to the chest, Tommy fell and Danny put a round between his eyes. He then rushed over to Jimmy and Michael, but it was too late for them, Tommy had taken massive chunks of their necks and they had bled to death. He knelt over Jimmy and crossed himself

"Requiescat in Pace" he said, closing Jimmy's eyes.

it was then that they opened again.

"FUCK ME!" Danny said jumping back, he raised his gun and put the last four shots of this clip into Jimmy's center of mass.

he might as well have been throwing bullets.

"FUCK!" he threw his heavy pistol at him and dove over the bar, grabbing the shotgun he knew to be stashed there. Jimmy had jumped over the bar as well and Danny rose just in time to block Jimmys bite with the stock of the shotgun. They wrestled a moment before Danny clubbed him with the butt of the gun and then bringing the barrel to bear. He pulled the trigger, and Jimmys head exploded in a fountain of gore. He turned just in time to see Michael climbing onto the bar.

"FUCK!" he said, pumping the shotgun. Michael leapt, Danny squeezed the trigger. Michaels head exploded.

Danny lowered the shotgun, breathing heavily. He quickly took Jimmy and Michael's guns, and the box of shotgun shells, and left the pub in a hurry.

He ran to his classic GTO and opened the door, he got in quickly and closed the door behind him. He opened the glove compartment and pulled out his spare clip and slammed it into his gun. He tossed the empty clip and the other guns onto the passenger seat and stashed the shotgun between the seats. He lit a cigarette and started the car.

With a roar of the engine he peeled out.

What the fuck was going on?

As soon as he heard the the driver of the car had been bitten Daniel stopped and looked at it. He knew that it was the last place that he wanted to go near but yet he had to see if the person was alright. He turned and looked back at the doctor just to see her lean against the front of her SUV.

"Stay here. I'll just check on the driver of the car that rammed you and come back. You will be safe here but I will be back. I promise you that I will be back."

With that he walked towards the car and as he did he dropped his right hand down towards the handle of his pistol. As he moved towards it all that he could see that the passenger side had been ripped away much as Mr Jacobs door had. When he saw that his first reaction was to swear out loud but he knew that if he did so it would make the doctor worry and that was the last thing that he needed.

As he walked towards the car Daniel kept looking around him, just in case someone ran at him. He knew by the way Mr Jacobs had moved in his apartment that he would have to shoot fast and then move. When he saw that there was nobody about he walked towards the driver and wondered if he was okay. He stopped though when he saw that a large part of the poor man's throat had been torn away as if by a large animal and Daniel couldn't help but swear under his breath. He moved to the drivers door and pulled it open as best he could then leaned forward to check on the driver.

As soon as he was close enough the driver raised his head and looked at Daniel which caused him to move back and pulled out his pistol.

"Help me. My wife bit me. She had gone crazy," the man said with barely a whisper.

Daniel looked at the man and could tell by the size of the wound and the amount of blood that was on his neck that this man didn't have much longer to live. He knew that he could call the doctor over butwas surethat she would be fighting a losing battle and did not want her to come over just in case this man came back to life and tried to kill them both.

"Easy sir. I will try and help you as best as I can," Daniel said as he reached forward.

Just as he did the man let out a groan and fell forward on his steering wheel. Daniel looked at him with a curse and leaned forward to check for a pulse but knew that he wouldn't be able to find one. He looked at the poor man and wished that it had never happened to him.

He turned back towards the doctor and opened his mouth to tell her that he was dead but just as he opened his mouth he heard a sound behind him and turned just to see the driver struggling against the seat belt. Daniel jumped back a few steps and cursed as loud as he could before he pulled out his pistol, brought it up and fired.

The bullet struck the man in the chest and once again ripped through his flesh into the seat behind him. Daniel looked at him with disgust as the man continued to struggle against the seat. He slowly raised his pistol, aimed at the man's head and squeezed the trigger again. This time the bullet struck the man in the forehead and Daniel heard a loud crack as the bullet passed through the opposite side.

He hoped that this was going to be enough and kept his pistol pointed at the man, just in case. He knew that if that didn't kill him then he would be in serious trouble. It was then that the man fell back onto the steering wheel but did not move.

Daniel then moved back to the doctor and tried to find any words to tell her what just happened but found that he couldn't.

Miranda didn’t pay much attention as the man checked them out, she had already checked and couldn’t find a pulse so she didn’t really see the point in him checking. Then the gunfire started and she saw him put three rounds in the old man. She quickly jumped out of the driver’s seat and came out to meet him.

“What the fuck was that? You just shot a man. I’m going make sure you get arrested for that.” She pulled out her cell and tried dialing but received no reception.

“Dammit. Look, I’m going to the hospital. You just stay…” She was cut off by a low moan, turning around she saw a man dragging his leg as he came upon them.

“Oh my god. Sir are you okay?” She asked as he approached her, his face once in full view was twisted and seemed to be in rapid decay. She was now very close to him and the smell also matched that of something that had decayed for awhile. The man was covered in dirt as well, almost as if he just dug himself out of the ground. Miranda was unprepared for when the man lunged at her, knocking her flat on her back. She forced him away but he was strong and slowly was inching his mouth towards her neck.

“Help! God help me! Please!” She pleaded to the man she’d only minutes ago accused of being a murderer.

Life sucks. I mean really, it truly sucks. I hate seeing all these 'happy' people, all laughing, all smiling, all falling over each other on those stupid Lifestyle shows that just manage to underscore the true suckiness of life. I walk along the street and people look at me weird, with my black ruffle skirt, my white corset, my black elbow length lace gloves, the ten thousand pendents of various deathly and destructive figurines hanging around my neck. Girls snicker and make comments as I pass them in the hallways at school and call me 'emo' or 'goth'. What's so wrong with liking the colour black? Or deep purple? Or crimson for that matter? Just because I've got more colour sense then they have in their little toes doesn't mean that I like being laughed and pointed at.

All right, I've made my point. Life sucks. There are just a few things in life that don't. One is me. The others are heavy metal female artists, or 'goth rock' as people label them; fantasy fiction and Daniella. Sure, her name sucks, but she sure as hell doesn't.

When I made the move the America, the so called land of the free, I found myself just as ostracised and outcast as I had in Australia. Unfortunately, due to contract, I couldn't just up and say I wanted to go back. Danniella saved my life. She's just like me. Well, if you switch my black for her pink and my lace gloves for her manicures. Not to mention her stupid belief that lip gloss was the saviour of the human race. Still, she loves my music, loves my sense of humour and most of all, she doesn't judge.

So when she got sick, I was devastated. Naturally. There were heaps of rumours going on at school when the news finally came in that she was in intensive care in her own quarantined ward in the hospital. Rumours that mostly involved me, candles and chicken's blood. As if.. just because I like the darker side of life doesn't mean that I'm automatically a witch. Or Wiccan... or whatever. Like I said, satanist equals a no. But seeing as Danny and I had been practically inseparable, people just assumed.

Every body assumes wrongly at least once in their life. They're lucky if they don't do it a thousand times. But some of the rumours actually made me wish they were true so that I could hex the hell out of those little bitches who thought they were pretty hot shit. Ha... shit! Yeah, you know. I realise that they are at that.

Anyway, when Danny got sick after some sort of animal bite, I tried to be there for her as much as I could. Her parents hadn't exactly liked me and the quarantine only gave them another excuse to push me out of her life. I got bits and pieces of information from nurses and doctors that took pity on me when I hung around the hospital for so long. It turned out that Danny wasn't doing so well.

Before I knew it, the docs were saying she was dead. At first I didn't believe it. I mean, there were heaps of 'animal attacks' going on at the moment and plenty of them were just walking out of the hospital. Sure, they didn't look so crash hot, but they were alive. What was so different about Danny? I just couldn't believe that she was actually gone.

They informed me that whatever had taken her hadn't been airborn, so I could visit her for a little while. Even though she was dead, they were going to do tests and stuff. The parents had agreed. No doubt the hospital was paying them shit loads. Despite the being dead part... I just had to see her. It had been just a very short week, but I missed her so much. She really had been the light in my life. I guess I just wanted to make sure that she was really dead. You know, seeing is believing and all that.

When I got to her ward, it smelled so clean and medical. You know, those chemical bathing agents you always smell in hospitals, no matter where you are, except here it was so much stronger. Considering Danny died of an unknown disease transmitted by the animal bite, I could see why it smelled like a chem lab.

When I saw her laying there, golden hair splayed over her fluffed up pillows, I swore that she was just sleeping. But her chest didn't rise. I tried holding my breath with her, just in case it was all just a cruel joke, but soon, after bursting my lungs, I fully took in the fact that she was gone.

I'm not a cryer. Not usually, but I found hot tears stinging my eyes and I'm sure my heavy black liner was running by the time I managed to stop sobbing. My nose was blocked with the inevitable congestion and my eyes were hot. I felt the beginnings of a really good headache coming on and all I wanted to do was stuff my head into some cold water.

I walked to the little bathroom that adjoined the cold little room to splash some water over my face. Even though I didn't really care what I looked like to other people, I took some tissues and wet them, scrubbing at my eyes and face so that my heavy makeup didn't look so wrecked. I saw my own pale skin reflected in the mirror and shook my head to clear it.

Danniella was gone and life sucked again. I guess I had already come to terms with it. Or maybe I had just buried it deep enough so that it didn't hurt right now. However which way, I knew that it would come to bite me emotionally in the future. I had had plenty of that in my life, so I guess I was used to it. Eventually when the hurt did come, I'd forgotten what it was about so it wasn't so bad.

Walking back into the room, I looked at the bed that Danny was laying in one more time. I don't know, I guess I just wanted to remember how peaceful she looked or something. But when I looked... she wasn't there. I was confused but I figured that they must have moved the body when I was in the bathroom or something. Wasn't that supposed to happen in hospitals?

I saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye and turned to face it, curious. With wide eyes, I realised that it was Danny. Alive and well. Actually, she had this crazy look in her eyes and she was drooling from the mouth slightly. But other than that, crouching in the corner of the room, she looked perfectly fine. But mostly, she looked alive.

I grinned and laughed, "Danny! You're alive! How did you - " I was cut off as she suddenly gave a feral growl and launched herself at me. At first I was shocked but I guess instincts took over and I moved away, scrambling backwards into the bathroom, slamming the door closed. I saw myself in the little mirror as the door behind me began to pound inwards. I was shocked as I heard growling and moaning from the other side of the door.

Then I heard screaming, the clattering of something being dropped on the floor and the sound of running footsteps. The growling and the moaning followed the footsteps. Breathing hard, I waited for a little while; probably only a few minutes but it felt like forever, before I allowed myself to crack open the door.

Ducking out, my heart pounding, I raced out of the little bathroom, screaming my lungs out as I collided into a solid body just outside of the ward.

"Easy miss, easy there," came a male voice and I opened my tightly squeezed eyes. My heart slowed down marginally as I realised that it was just a hospital security guard. I breathed a sigh of relief as I saw him and then started gibbering about what had just happened.

Again he asked me to be calm and then he informed me that the hospital was being quarantined. There was a check point up at reception and I was to report there to see if I was infected or they'd let me go. Blinking I followed his instructions numbly, only realising later just how easily he had disarmed my usually wary and distrustful nature. That guy was good.

I didn't see Danny again and a part of me, well almost all of me, was glad that I didn't get to. At the check I was poked and inspected and told that I was 'clear'. Then I was shoved out of the door where police escorted me over the street.

I must admit that this all passed in a sort of daze because the next thing I knew I was on an almost deserted street and watching as two cars crashed into each other. I blinked, coming back to reality and was running to the crash site, morbidly wondering if anyone had survived. Apparently someone had as a woman began screaming for help.

I was just about to call out to her when I saw another man come running up to assist the woman. Then I was knocked to my feet sideways. I soon found myself struggling and as I looked up, I saw a woman, much older than I was with the same demented look in her eyes that Danny had had. I knew that help was just a few feet away but my voice wouldn't work and I had enough trouble trying to keep the woman from tearing my flesh apart with her teeth.

I suddenly heard shots ring out and that was when my voice magically came to the fore.

It was my turn to scream for help.

The first instant that Daniel heard the scream he brought his pistol up and aimed it at the man who was crawling his way up Miranda's body, obviously trying to get to her throat. He aimed at the man's head but he knew that if he squeezed the trigger that Miranda would die and that was the last thing that he wanted, especially since she was the only other human that he had seen. He raced over to the man and was prepared to kick him off Miranda when he heard another scream and looked over to see a young woman struggling with another woman. He looked down at Miranda and then over at the young woman.

"Now this is a totally fucked up day!" he screamed as he rushed over to where the young girl was. As he got closer to her he could see that she was having trouble with the woman and raised his pistol. As with Miranda he saw that he wouldn't be able to fire or he would hit her. He lowered his pistol quickly and looked at the woman, wondering just what the fuck he was going to do. It was then that a thought came to him. He knew it was crazy but he had to try.

"Hey bitch! Get off the girl!" he shouted just as he kicked the woman in the head.

As he fell to the ground Daniel brought up his pistol, aimed it at the woman's head and fired as she started to get back up. He watched as the woman fell to the ground again and looked down at the young woman.

"Stay here and I will introduce myself later. I just have something else I have to do at the moment."

He ran back over to Miranda and aimed a kick at the man's side. He watched as the man raised his head from Miranda's neck.

"That's it, give me a good shot."

With that he fired into the man's head and watched as the man fell onto Miranda. He looked down at her, "Are you alright?"

He helped push the man off her and walked back towards the young woman.

"Sorry about running off like that. The name's Daniel. What's yours?"

Miranda struggled, barely fending off the man until Daniel killed it. The limp body weighed down on Miranda but at least it wasn't still trying to bite her.

"Are you alright?"

She only nodded a yes to him, wanting to keep her mouth closed to avoid any of the gore getting in it. She stood and dusted herself off before leaning against the car and hugging herself as she tried to control the shaking, after a minute though it passed. She was trained to deal with hostile situations and while this one was unique in that the man tried to bite her, it was far from the worst thing she'd seen working in the O.R. of a hospital.

"Maybe we should get out of here."

I was screaming my guts out, trying to get away from the snarling middle aged woman that just wouldn't stop trying to bite me. She was impossibly strong and she'd already ripped chunks out of my clothes. I definitely didn't want her to rip chunks out of my skin!

"Hey bitch! Get off the girl!"

A male voice came to my rescue and I screamed all the louder. My throat was hoarse and I was really really beginning to panic. Life had just suddenly gotten suckier, at least from where she stood, or laid.

Another gun shot rung out and suddenly the woman was laying on her side, her face barely recognisable for the hole that marred her features next to me. What else could I do? I screamed some more as the man said something and then ran off to kill another person.

Blinking through a haze of tears and blood I found myself crying uncontrollably.

"My name's Daniel, what's your?"

I blinked. Danielle? No wait... this was a guy. Daniel. Daniel... yes, that was his name. My reasoning skills were shot and I had to run the following question through my mind several time before it truly registered. "J... Jam.. Jamie..."

My throat hurt so much and I couldn't stop shaking. I sitting by now and another, thankfully normal, woman called out that we should be getting a move on. I frankly couldn't have agreed with her more.

I looked up at the man that seemed to suddenly have all the answers. "What's going on?"

Danny saw the altercation and pulled over getting out of the car just as the other man killed two of the combatants. He moved over, his gun out and ready. He placed his gun at the back of the man's head

"Slowly turn." he said, in his thick irish brogue. He wanted to make sure this people were not going to try to bite him too.

Daniel opened his mouth to answer the women that he had just saved but before he could he felt the gun being pressed up against the back of his head. His eyes widened and his first reaction was to turn around and look at the man who was pressing the gun against his head but he knew that if he did so it would more than likely get him killed. He slowly lowered his pistol out of sight before he said, "I am just going to slowly turn around to face you."

As soon as he did he looked straight into the man's eyes, "I was saving those two women's lives. If you do not believe me you can either ask them or shoot me. Either choice is yours but I prefer that it is not the latter or them. I want to keep my life and I want to make sure that those two over there," he pointed to Jaime and Miranda, "are kept safe. I don't know what the hell is going on here but I think that we have to stay together if we are going to stay safe. And I think that we need all the weapons that we can get our hands on."

He wanted to turn to see if Miranda and Jaime were alright but something told him that it was best to keep facing this man who looked as though he could have killed you without having a second thought."

I was waiting for an answer from the man named Daniel when all of a sudden another man with a gun came and practically buried it into his head. "What the?" I asked in a half whisper, my hands flying to my mouth before I realised that my hands were actually covered in gore.

"Ugh!" I hastily wiped off my hands onto my black skirt. Strangely enough, I realised that blood does actually show up on black. Wouldn't you know it?

Before the big man could blow out the brains of the one that had rescued me, I found myself rushing to a standing position, by short hair sticking out in all sorts of places as I tried to brush it from my eyes.

"Hang on mister! What he says is true. Some crazy woman just came and attacked me for no reason... and... well... he shot her." I thought I was stammering, then again, I was also shaking. I looked helplessly at both the woman and Daniel hoping that I wouldn't see even more blood today.

"Yeah it's true. He saved me, I would've been killed if not for him." Cameron seconded as she edged closer, though not planning to take the gun or attempt to take it.

"Come on let's stop fighting, we have to get indoors. This place is way too dangerous." She looked around the streets, screams and sirens could be heard in the distance.

Danny gave him an appraising stare then moved his gun.

"Very well, we need to get inside, come with me to my apartment, these lassies are going to need guns."

He walked over to his car, beckoning them to follow.

"Very well, we need to get inside, come with me to my apartment, these lassies are going to need guns."

I blinked. Suddenly it was over and I breathed a sigh of relief. I glanced towards Daniel and wondered what to do next. Wait... did he say us lassies needed guns?

I'm not a dog!

Oh... he's irish. At least I thought so, his accent is recognisable. So, he had to mean women. Right? Yeah.

Hang on... guns? Oh great, oh just great.

"But... I don't want a gun!" I suddenly screamed, feeling my panic hit the 'full on' button. Everything that had happened to me so far just suddenly hit me like a fire engine diving into the side of a building.

"What the FUCK is going ON!!!"

Cameron shared the same opinion as the other woman.

"Yes, look I'm not going anywhere with a stranger in this city. Especially now that it seems everyone has gone insane." The corner of her eye caught sight of one of the bodies and getting a real good look at it she saw that it was in the process of decomposing, which was of course impossible. Someone had done something to these people, this was no disease she'd heard of and it seemed to have spread in a matter of minutes.

"My apartments only a couple blocks away. Smart money's on holing up there until this whole thing blows over. The police will have it handled by morning. You're all welcome to come. It's safer than going all commando out in the streets."

As if on cue a police car appeared out of nowhere, coming towards them fast. Daniel stepped out to try and flag the car down but noticed by the way that it was driving that something was definitely wrong with it. He started to move towards the woman but just as he did the car slammed into Miranda's car, skidded off it and crashed into the wall of the closest building. As Daniel slowly got back to his feet he noticed one of the doors of the police car opening and raised his pistol.

He watched the door closely to see if anyone came out of it but as he did he wondered if he had enough ammunition left in his pistol. He hated the fact that he hadn't brought any more with him but knew with the way that he had gotten out of the apartment that he was lucky to have gotten away at all. He kept his eyes on the police car, ready for anything and it was then that he heard the loud sound off to his left.

Daniel slowly turned his head in that direction and when he saw the horde of people coming towards him turned back to the others and shouted out, "This is not the time to debate anything. Let us just get in the car so we can get the fuck out of here!"

He started to run towards the car, hoping that nobody in the horde was faster than him.

I blinked, looking at all the 'adults' that were around me, discussing this and that. Two had guns and another had a sense of calming authority. The woman did make a good point about it being stupid to go all 'commando' on these things, what ever they were.

Every body was just insane!

My eyes widened when the one with the bigger gun went one way, Miranda did nothing and Daniel went the other way. I also happened to glance around and see the hoard of crazy, decaying people coming towards us.

I looked at all three, not really knowing what to do. I was so confused! So I did the only thing my brain could comprehend at the time. I crouched down, put my hands over my head and began screaming for my life.

Daniel stopped when he heard the young woman screamed then turned on his heels to see her crouched down in the path of the horde of people coming towards her. He raised his pistol, held it tightly in his hand and ran towards her then stopped, grabbed her hand and tried to pull her to her feet. He knew that the last thing he wanted to do was leave her here; that was the last thing he was going to do this day.

"What the fuck do you think you are doing? This is no time to do this!"

He knew that he was going to scare the young woman by the way that he was speaking, especially with the fact that he was holding a pistol in his hand but right now he did not care. All he wanted was to get everyone that was here out in this street to some sort of safety. It was then that he saw the movement off to his right and raised his pistol just fast enough to point it at the police officer who had his mouth open.

Without even thinking Daniel pulled the trigger and watched as the back of the police officer's head exploded. As the officer fell to the ground Daniel watched him in slow motion and noticed with a smile that he had a pistol with him. He leaned down as soon as the officer had hit the ground, pulled the pistol and extra magazines free and turned to look at the horde that was steadily getting closer. He raised both pistols but knew that it was still not going to be enough. He once again looked at the young woman, "We are going to get in that car and get the hell out of here. Unless you want to be killed by those people that are coming towards us. Personally, I would like nothing more than to see you live, but it is your choice."

He didn't move away from her though, hoping that she would make the right choice and come with him.

I just kept screaming and screaming. Dimly, in the back of my mind, I registered chanting. "This isn't real, this isn't real, this isn't real..." No matter how many times I said it in my head though, it didnt' come true.

No matter what, I had to face the fact that it was real and I had to face it soon. But, that didn't mean I wanted to.

Suddenly I was yanked to my feet, I sobbed, looking up to see Daniel's strong hand gripping my thin wrist. Beyond the screaming, I felt a small blossom of pain and indignation.

"What the fuck do you think you are doing? This is no time to do this!"

Then he shot the cop.

"STOP FUCKING SHOOTING PEOPLE!!" I found myself shouting into his face, trying to make my body limp and impossible for him to drag away. Then he had the gall to loot the corpse he had just made. I felt myself get sick and thickly swallowed the bile that rose in my throat.

I didn't know who was more crazy, the people trying to eat us, Daniel or me for wanting to go with him.

"Fine!" I huffed and hurried towards the car. Scrambling in, I looked right and left for the rest of our little 'group'. And resisted the urge to scream again.

"Great," I muttered, snivelling, "I'm stuck with two homicidal maniacs, a doc and people trying to eat me. Fan-fucking-tastic."

"My apartment has a reinforced steel door and weapons." Danny said "And my car works, so follow me or take your chances alone!" he said, watching the horde approaching. "Decide!"

As reluctant as she was to go with them she reluctantly fell in line, she didn't want to be alone and the wind was blowing towards everyone going with him so she was prepared to go with the wind.

"Alright. Let's just get out of here. I don't plan on dying tonight." She stayed close to the other woman, the only seemingly sane one in the bunch. The men as all men, were playing up their macho side by shooting people. She just hoped they didn't turn their guns on her.
