I am, as you may have guessed a trendsetter or even a tend follower. I have absolutely no ide what is in or out, hot or not so I need some help.

I'm working on a short story both for NaNoWriMo and the Christmas story comp here and I need my guy to be shopping for an expensive, popular, hard to find gift for his demanding girlfriend. Only this one thing will do or he will throw a hissy fit and probably leave him or worse, sulk 'til next Christmas.

It's got to be something expensive, labelled and hard to get hold of either because it's rare but maybe better if it's just so popular it's often sold out.

I'm thinking something like a designer handbag, jewellry, a dres or lingerie, perfume something like that.

So if you could help me out I'd be more than grateful. I don't even know where to start looking for such information.

thanking you with hugs and kisses in advance,

EL X

Among the women I work with, an expensive handbag is THE thing to have. Gucci and Coach bags are the big favorites. They cost anywhere from a couple hundred (US $) to over a thousand.

Other expensive gifts I might suggest would be an iPhone, shoes (platform shoes are still big), or good ole-fashioned jewelry.

Designer handbag. The 'names' are often sold out. Have him buy a fake - she'll give him hell - he might enjoy it :D

Oops... sorry. I'm not a Gal

The Nintendo Wii is the number 1 "can't find one for love nor money" item at the moment. But it's not very girly, so I'm not sure if that'll do for you.

Or combine the two and get a designer phone?

It would totally do it for me :D

A pair of Jimmy Choo shoes - a simple pair of pumps will run you around $500. Hot label right now.

As others mentioned, a Coach or Gucci bag would be good.

If you can get ahold of the Neiman Marcus Fantasy Catalog, you'd probably find something in there that's as expensive as you can possibly imagine (you wouldn't believe some of the stuff in there), and some of those gifts are also one of a kind.

I like the phone but it might stil be a bag *grins*
we'll see.

thanks for all your help, guys

The Dolce & Gabbana phone. I know last christmas getting one was impossible and they went for over 3000 pounds. Not sure about this year as I haven't spoken to the person who was hunting for one for ages.

I'd vote for bag over phone. People are lusting after the iPhone yes, but they're not that hard to get (at least not in the U.S.), or that expensive (I rather doubt the Armani phone will be that outrageous in price either--pricey, yes, but hundreds of dollars is not thousands of dollars). They're one of those gotta-have-one because they're cool or trendy gifts. You bring it out and if your friends notice, they ooh, and ah, and say, "how cool," then they get one, for themselves.

That's not quite the same as a limited-edition, thousand-dollar bag which, hanging off your shoulder, will announce to the world how elite you are. Your friends will lust and drool over that bag and envy you because they either can't afford it or it's a rarity that can't be gotten any longer. There are only so many out in the world and somehow, you snagged one, you lucky bitch!

This really put the pressure on the guy as well. He searches and searches, the last one gets away...and there ARE NO MORE! Really. The designer made a limited edition and they're all gone. That's something to really sweat over. Games or Phones might vanish and not be avalible for Xmas, but after Xmas there'll probably be more. Not this handbag!

I like the idea, also, of him giving her a fake. That would really cause an explosion, either after she hugs and kisses him and realizes it's fake, or, worse, when she takes it out to display to her friends and, to her mortification, some bitchy friend who is always one-upping her (who she hoped to one-up with the bag) points out that it's bogus! Double big hit there--no bag (big disappointment) and humiliation. A woman like that might well kill her boyfriend for doing something like that.

I think I might go for the bag thing. Looking at the phones they're not outrageously expensive enough :p

I don't want to give my story away, but thanks for the suggestions -I don't think they'll work with what I'm doing -so if you're inspired -go for it :p

Why does it have to be a real brand? Why can;t you just make it very clear that the EnglishLadyImaginary Handbag is *the* handbag to have and everyone who's anyone simply *must* have one...?

Because, like you, I'm not very up on things so if you just said a Coach handbag and didn;t give any background anyway I wouldn;t have a clue what you were talking about...

first edition

A rare first edition of her favorite book?

(who does not care for bags, shoes or phone, but will kill for books)

PS- in the UK Christian Louboutin shoes are *the* shoes to have atm, apparently (mys sister told me, so it must be true. Unlike me, she actually follows trends)

it's not necessarily the brand I'm looking for, I can make that up if needs be, but I wondered what a trendy gal would want. It seems she'd want an expensive handbag, that is what my guy will get :D

I, personally, don;t get the handbag thing...
I'd be more exicted about jewellery or underwear ;) But that's just me and handbags seem to be popular with others...

I think part of it has to do with the fact that a handbag is an accessory that you might show off a lot. Expensive underwear doesn't get seen by anyone but those you want to see it, and expensive jewelry usually only gets worn on special occasions with a special outfit. But you can use the same handbag with a lot of different outfits, day after day. Like a guy who drives an expensive car, an expensive handbag gets displayed every time you go out into the world. It's not just on your arm/over your shoulder, it's brought out and exhibited when you need your wallet, make up, cellphone, etc. Thus it flaunts your rarified status.

I'll say on that note that I carry around an inexpensive but rather cool, gothy handbag; it's not overt in its look or design, but it's gotten more notice and more comments than any other article of clothing or accessory I've ever owned. I think this is because people get a good look at it whether it's over my shoulder or set down on a table or counter so I can dig through it.

i don't get that either. backpacks are much more practical - more space, and easier to carry. handbags seem to be in the way mroe than anything. but then i am weird. i don't even get what is so interesting about shoes. or jewellery. underwear ok. that can be nice.

I carry a handbag, but that's because it's the exact size to fit all the stuff I usually carry around with me.

I like nice shoes, and I like jewellery and pretty underwear too, but the thing I don't get is the fixation on everything having to be a "designer" item or brand name. It says so little about quality these days (I wonder if it ever did?).

ETA: Just to clarify, my handbag cost five bucks. And I wouldn't get all excited if I got an expensive handbag for Christmas. I wouldn't see the point of that.
