Republicans fear Trump’s trade war could lead to political wipeout

Republican lawmakers say there’s a good chance that President Trump’s trade war will boomerang on Republicans politically in 2026, as rising prices and shrinking growth could offset other accomplishments by the GOP.
Republican senators are pointing to the 1932 and 1982 elections as historical examples of when trade wars and resulting price inflation hurt their party at the ballot box, and they are worried that history could repeat itself.

upstate NY farmer, who believed trump's words about tariffs being paid by the countries they were imposed on, shocked to find his cattle feed bill just jumped by over $2,000 dollars and is questioning if it's even legal for the Canadian company to pass that on to him. Bless.

Unfortunately for Gilbert, the tariff is very much legal. Like many American business owners, he mistakenly believed that tariffs on imported goods would be paid by the foreign exporter.

In reality, the charge was imposed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and passed directly to him.

"We’re taking that right on the chin,” Gilbert tells the magazine, explaining that he would have to pay tariffs on the fertilizer and farm equipment he buys too.

sympathy from Canadians was in short supply.

"How can an adult believe that the president of one country could force an exporter in another country to pay a tax on his or her behalf? How would that even work?" says one user.

That's because most Republicans in Congress are a whole lot smarter than Trump, and clearly see what damage this trade war with the whole world will do to the American economy.

And they can also see that no party but the GOP will take the blame.

If the Congress cowards can't do their job trying to impeach this felon and stop him, then they need to resign or get voted out.

The Dems will sweep the midterms -- but probably not by a large enough margin that the Senate can muster 2/3 to convict the rat fink.

When the midterms get closer, a lot of Pub pols are going to turn against Trump openly.
