Democrat Accuses Republican of ‘Carrying Water for the Mexican on the Fourth Floor’

“The Mexican” being Suzana Martinez, governor of the state of New Mexico.

A Republican legislator said she was verbally assailed by House Majority Whip Sheryl Williams Stapleton during a committee break at the Capitol on Wednesday and that the Democratic leader angrily referred to Gov. Susana Martinez as “the Mexican on the Fourth Floor.”

Rep. Nora Espinoza, R-Roswell, said Stapleton accused her of publicly questioning her (Stapleton’s) integrity during a recent controversy involving Albuquerque Public Schools, where Stapleton works as an administrator while also serving in the Legislature.

” ‘You’re carrying the water for the Mexican on the Fourth Floor,’ ” Espinoza quoted Stapleton as saying, referring to the controversy and the Republican governor.

“She said it three times right there” during a lunch break of the Legislative Education Study Committee, Espinoza said.

Here’s the Democrat in question’s website. If she were a Republican, this would soon be a national story replete with calls for the party leaders to distance themselves from this hateful figure. But we all know that’s not going to happen.

For the record, Gov. Martinez is of Mexican descent. But by birth she is a third generation Texan. Calling her “the Mexican” is a bit like calling me “the Englishman.” Or “the Cherokee” I guess. Not really an insult, but not really accurate either. Just evidence of an intolerant mind atop a loud mouth with nothing of worth to say.

Stapleton is a black female representing a district with 22% republican registration, in other words she's a fixture in the state house.

She is also an administrator with the Albuquerque Public School district. APSD rules said that APSD employees will NOT be compensated for time spent away from the district on state business. The obvious concept was to prevent 'double-dipping' into the publics wallet. Stapleton has drawn over $186,000 in compensation from the APSD while she was attending legislative sessions over the years, sessions that she was also drawing money from the state.

When this was disclosed the Supervisor of the APSD changed the rule and made it apply ex post facto so that Stapleton would not have to reimburse the APSD for the monies that she had drawn in violation of the rules in force at the time.

It has caused one hell of a stink in Albuquerque, but given the make up of her district she'll undoubtedly be re-elected. The fate of the districts supervisor is not so certain.

After a while, even I get tired of playing this particular card, but can you imagine if it had been a white male Republican doing this? Referring to the Governor as “the Mexican?” The media would be in full blown, pearl clutching meltdown mode by now. But apparently this remains a “move along… nothing to see here” story.

So what does Representative Stapleton plan on doing about the original charges in the report? Particularly given her position as Majority Whip in the state house, I’m sure she’s going to set aside some of her duties until we can get to the bottom of it. Right?

In a news conference Thursday (Dec. 15) that took a couple odd turns, state Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton (D-Albuquerque) apologized for angrily confronting Rep. Nora Espinoza (R-Roswell) and saying Espinoza was “carrying the Mexican’s water on the fourth floor,” site of the offices of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez in New Mexico’s state capitol building.

But despite calls from state Republicans, Stapleton said she would “absolutely not” step down from her position as Majority Whip in the state’s House of Representatives.

You’ll need to click through to the full article to read the rather amazing, incoherent, rambling non-apology that she issued to the Governor, the House and her constituents. It seems there’s still really nothing wrong with calling the Governor “the Mexican on the 4th floor” because… you know… it’s not a racial slur. It means “people of Mexican descent” and besides, “there are lots of people on the 4th floor.” Not to mention, “we are both women of color,” so I guess it’s all no harm, no foul, eh?

You can certainly see why she wouldn’t be resigning over a little thing like this. I’m sure she’d be just as forgiving if this same slur had come from one of her GOP colleagues, right
