I've posted both new stories and those I've revised that had been posted on alt.sex.stories.moderated. I'm finding about about 1 person in a hundred who opens a story is likely to vote, and about a in a thousand will send feedback.

Some stories do much better, but that seems to be about average for me. Is that what other writers are experiencing?

Thanks

Yes, your sit'n does approximate mine. My most-viewed story has received over 36,000 views but only 144 votes; that would be approx. 1 vote for every 250 views. Feedback messages are indeed very few & far between. Most of the views, votes & comments come when the story is new; once the novelty wears off, they all but die down. But don't let it get YOU down; keep on writin'!

votes and feedback

I would have to agree with those numbers, at least in a general sense. My own postings don't have a large enough response to apply statistical analysis. Most of my stories run closer to 1/4 of a percent votes to views (0.25%). The numbers of votes are generally between 20 and 30 so one story with a few extra votes would skew that dramatically. However, based on what I can see on my own, taken together with other comments I have seen authors make, 1% votes for 100% of views is probably accurate. As far as feedback, my numbers are higher expressed as percentages, but thats because with my low vote totals, one voter providing feedback actually comes out to a high percentage (ex. 15 votes and one provides feedback is way better than 1 in a 1000, but not statistically meaningful in such a small sample).

As far as the votes to views ratios, I suspect several factors causing the seemingly light response. readers might take a peek, find a story not to their style and move on. However, a view has been added. Similarly, the reader may be reading it again (or finishing up a longer story), but of course they could only vote once. Then of course some readers don't vote or vote occassionally. I tend to vote about half the stories I view (only those I finish get a vote) and I send feedback much more rarely, mostly when a story really strikes me.

I can't complain about low responses, esp. since I don't send much feedback myself. I'm just glad to see that response rates seem to be consistent across the site.

IMHO, any feedback and votes a writer gets off the main posting site are a bonus or lagniappe (a little something extra). Most of the feedback I've gotten has come from this spot and the Story Discussion Circle. RF
