Lucy was a junior reporter for a lifestyle magazine. Pretty but shy, the young redhead had been assigned to review the city's newest restaurants, bars, clubs and parties. Fairly new to the job, she had had moderate success so far accessing the latest goings on around the city but her editor wanted more. She had heard rumours of a private club on the edge of town, only attended by the wealthy and elite. Information about what went on at these parties, which could last for days, was sparse and nobody was willing to talk on the record.

Managing to secure the details of a time and place though, she thought she'd try her luck. It was a Friday evening when her cab pulled up outside the large stately home. She stepped out, dressed in a black gown, short heels, her hair in a tight ponytail, trying best to look as if she belonged. Taking a breath she stepped up to the front door and the bouncer.

"Member number?" He looked up from his ipad.

Nervously she tried her best...."I am meeting someone here, he should be along shortly, may I wait inside?"

"Sorry darling, nice try, members only"

Blushing a little embarassed, she skulked out of the queue. Wandering around the corner of the estate she checked to see if there was another way in. After a few minutes she had lost hope and resigned herself to heading home. But as she turned she caught sight of a couple of young attractive women heading into a small service entrance at the side, another bouncer ushering them. She had her chance.....

"This is one of Mr. James favorite clubs," the taller girl was telling her shorter companion, as the bouncer opened the door for the two young ladies.

"Yeah, I wouldn't try it if I were you..."

Lucy spun around with a startled gasp at the mysterious voice. In the shadows of the back stone tile walk stood the largest black german shepherd; ears back, shoulders haunches tight with its fur standing on end‐‐a low predatory growl coming from a behind white canines. Before Lucy could scream she quickly stepped back stumbling over a heavy planter , falling into the darkness of the night's shadows. Twisting to catch herself, Lucy prepared for the impact of the ground she could not see but it never came.

"I've got you..."

The voice from the darkness had swept her up with two strong arms and planted her back standing. Lucy could feel a solid muscular chest pressed against hers and the musky smell of a male that had been sweating.

"Sorry about Sam, she is a bit over protective..." then the stranger stepped back allowing light from the patios to fill the space between them. Lucy looked up into deep blue eyes that scanned her up and down as the roguish stranger gave an approving nod back at the Sheppard, "she also gets a bit jealous of beautiful young women stalking me."

"Wait...what, no, I wasn't, I mean... I, who are you? I was here for the party."

"But you don't have an invite and Anotoni is never going to let you in that door. Believe me, he can smell a reporter a mile away."

"I'm not a repor.... "

"Lucy on Life, right? Sure... I know it's a rag but when you have 12 hous at the top of some Afghan mountain with nothing to do you grab whatever magazine you haven't read before they drop you off. And I grabbed a stack from our squad room and they were all the same rags.... anyway... " he looked towards the back entrance, "you came to get into one of my parents parties?"

"Your parents? This is your parent's estate. You are the son of the Overstons? I, I thought their son was reported MIA... "

"Well, Lucy, apparently the reports were off. I'll let you in. Come'on Sam, let's take this fine lady into fray."

"You are Micha Overston then?" Lucy asked as she was helped back over the planter by the young man that stood a full head above her. In the light of the walkway she could see he had on a jogging suit fitting f ok r the cool of the evening but his sweatshirt was soaked through. His face was kind and warm with a bit of stubble and and short hair--not quite military cut, but you could tell he kept it fairly tight. There was a scar running down from his right eye brow around to his lower right neck though it did not detract from his handsome features 'well, not much' she thought.

"Tony...buddy... this fine lady is a guest of mine for tonight's little round of debauchery. "

"Mr Overston sir, I , I dont have a guest for you on the list... but of course... your father will be happy to know you are attending and with such a fine lady..."

"Not me big guy... Just my friend here. No question understood. " Micha Overston said with the forcefullness of a Marine Force Recon Master Sargent. Sam at his side with her stern look as well.

"Of course sir... no question... "

Lucy turn to Micha, "Your'e not coming?"

"Well, I'm not dressed for a party... and crowds aren't my thing. But get your story... nothing you will find or report will offend me. "

Lucy was shocked. She didn't know if she wanted to go in or learn more about Micha... but she had a deadline. "Thanks... I guess. ." Lucy leaned down to ruffle Sam between the ears as the shepherd wagged her tail, "You are a good girlfriend." Then gave a little laugh.

"Samatha usually doesn't take to anyone that quickly. But she always has good taste. " then Micha and Sam just turned and ran back into the darkness of the estate leaving Lucy in her thoughts... and wants.
