It was when the visigoths had come within visual the distance where we knew by their ugly and misspelled tattoos that they were, in fact, the enemy. By that point it was difficult to bring the oil to a boil before they got to the gate.

Look, we got them all oily, what's the big deal if it was only "warm" oil? It's not like there's a book that describes when you need to begin heating oil to PREPARE for visigoths (or any other of the various goths) when you haven't got a firm time of the attack. They didn't say when they'd be there. It took longer to get the fire properly hot owing to the breeze that day. I grant that the visigoths were more repugnant than average all bathed in the oil, which made their hair and beards look even more gruesome than ever. It's unfortunate that warm oil only makes them harder to capture or defeat, and the smell was unintentional, the oil had been stored on the roof a LONG time awaiting the need.

It's the ultimate weapon, it will turn back the tide of terror, we just need a little more R&D to get it fine-tuned.
