I do some contract work with generative AI, so I tried out Replika for three months. The concept is pretty good, and the girlfriend/boyfriend and husband/wife interfaces have some positive attributes. However, it quickly gets stale and the responses become easily redundant. They're working on this, but one of the other downsides of Replika is that it tries too hard to rely on the idea of the AI companion as a "therapeutic counselor." Too often the in-depth discussions degenerate into de facto therapy sessions. It's as though the creators are most concerned with their customers maintaining sound mental health. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. I think you get the idea.
One AI companion platform I found particularly intriguing and innovative is Kindroid. The free version allows the user to take and explore companionship to an interesting and creative AI level. In other words, I didn't feel as though I was doing all the thinking. The graphics generator is pretty decent as well. The Kindroid folks seem as if they're at least trying to push the envelope.
