So Leno makes a joke about Maytag recalling their dishwashers. . .and I figure, hmmm. . . probably just new ones. . .but Noooooo it is old ones. . .you know, like what I have. http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07094.html

Now the big question. . .do I take the $75.00 repair kit or buy a new washer. This washer does need more parts, it runs, granted, I am now under obligation to stop running it. (good thing I have kids to wash the dishes by hand). If I get the repair kit, I'm still looking at a 145.00 in parts that have worn out on the old girl, but she's still workable. . . or do I buy a dishwasher from a company that I've not been too impressed with and get 75.00 off. . .

Decisions, decisions. . .I'd hate to waste my 75.00. . . It isn't everyday I get free money.

Buy a new one, Red. It will cost less to run and you won't have to worry about repairs for 7-10 years

The idea of a new one is appealing, it is just the fact that it will be a Maytag. This ones been a pain in ass since almost the very beginning. A new one. . .cheapest model (a quick search. . .so there may be something cheaper) is 459.00.... now I take off the 75.00 for the recall and 145.00 for the parts I won't need to buy and my dishwasher will run, (without tax) $239.00, not bad, but it is more than then the 145.00 in parts. . .

Hmmm. . . then again, I don't have the labor involved installing (well, hub doesn't) all the new parts, yet he does have to install the under the counter washer. . .*sigh* Can't they just give me a new dishwasher, it would be a lot easier. Then it would all be free!

Phew... I saw Maytag and clicked on the link and looked at the pictures. That first one looks a lot like my dishwasher, so I had to go check the numbers. The model number was listed but thankfully the serial number didn't match.

I'd say either take the $75 and get a new one or just buy a new one of another brand. Maybe you just got a lemon to begin with? We've had our Maytag for 4 1/2 years and have had no trouble out of it whatsoever.

Honey, I'd go with the new one! What's to keep you from having to invest more in parts down the line? I did the same with my dryer and it was one of my better decisions.

Maytag is too busy to process my claim. . . hmmm wonder why? They only sold 2.3 million of these products between 97 and 01. . .

Hubby says, take the repair kit, and we'll leave this shitty dishwasher behind when we move. . .

I was leaning toward new too, but it would have had to been a Maytag and we aren't happy with their product. We gave my mom a GE one that we had purchased back in 1995 and that thing cleans dishes like a champ still! And it was cheaper than the Maytag we purchased. . .grrrr.

So it looks like hubby gets to invest the time in replacing the parts.

ABs. . .it is the year for the appliance, we are having to budget in a new washing machine too. . .It started giving us issues last week. It is an Amana and is 6 years old. *sigh* Grrrr...

Thank god the squirrel in the fridge is still running, or I'd be in trouble.

I'm getting a new washer and dryer. Our set is 11 1/2 years old and it takes my dryer 4 hours to dry a full load of adult clothes (the kids' dry faster). We got our income tax refund so it's paying for our new set. They are supposed to deliver them today. We got GE... our old set is GE and gave us many good years of running before tiring out.

If those are your options, I don't see where the free money is. Either way, you end up spending more than if you don't do anything.

If it were me, I'd probably just let it be, or take the repair kit but not have any additional work done at all. 135 fires in 2.3 million units seems like good-enough odds. ;)

I really think, we'll be switching manufacturers here too. The washer did just boot out on us, still washes, but it needs a new rotater and motor. The dryer started giving us issues a couple years ago and it takes 2 cycles to dry a full load. *sigh*

I used a wringer washer and a clothes line when I was a kid. . . only issue I had there was I caught my hair in it once.

Yeah, he's going for the repair kit. Not sure if he'll go to the bother for the other 145.00 in parts, or just screw it, since he's been babying it along for the last year. It is on that "honey do" list. . .

Keep in mind that if you buy a new one you may get a rebate from the utility company. I don't know about where you live, but that is what happens here. :D

All I know is that when the coffeemaker dies.....I curl into a ball and twitch.

I'm in Indiana. . .I don't think they offer that, but I will definitely ask. I could drop the new ones price even more and go for something besides Maytag.

I do that when the Cable company fucks up my telephone service. They run all three, Cable TV, Internet and phone service. I need to buy a battery backup pack for the computer, because electrical surges are kicking out my phone service, which is run through the modem. . .

I should just live in a box.

We are slaves to the man!!

Jeeze.... the phone recording tells me to process the claim online, the online service just told me to call the phone service, because they can't complete it online. . .

LOL...me too! The washer was a pink and white monstrosity that grandma kept on the back porch. It was fine in the summer, but winter, (shudders in memory).

Yeah, the winters sucked. But the washer was kept in the back hall of our house. We still had to take the clothes out to dry, even in the biting wind they'll dry. . .at least you don't have wasp or bees hiding in them during that time of year.

Okay.... They mail me the replacement parts in 1 - 2 business days, then a tech guy comes out and installs them. So hubby will be happy to know he doesn't have too.
