If we all lived back in older times (eg: Renaissance, Baroque, Med. times), what would we be?

Would you just do an older version of the profession you are in now, or would you be involved in a completely different trade?

People tell me they see me as an herbalist/midwife, and I think that is pretty accurate.

So where would you be?

SO many options!

Knights, Bards, Travelling sales people, Travelling entertainers, Wenches (I have a feeling we may have a lot of those here! ;) ;) ), Seamstresses, Other various assorted Artisans, Rugmakers, Weavers, Carpenters, etc.

Please don't say "serf," but I suppose if you want you can be a Count/Countess, Lord of the Manor, whatever.

Huzzah.

Wenches? We have wenches around here?

Okay, cool queastion, let me think... hmmm... uggghhh.
Probably a weaver or healer. Though I would keep that part very quiet. Don't like fire or drowning.

I knew playing so many role-playing games was going to come in handy some day!

I think that if I actually lived in a time when it was possible, I would be a hermit/philosopher. You know, sitting around in my hut all day just thinking shit up. That would be the life for me.

Of course I'd probably eventually get executed like Socrates was, after I'd wandered into the local village to enlighten those people.

But what a way to go, eh?

Hey Jade, don't you have a cooking class to be at? ;) hehehe

Just kidding. Good to see you back at your home away from home. :) Just don't let me see you here too much. If you want to be a neonatologist or other medical collegue of mine, you better make sure to kick some academic ass. (Pay no attention to the fact that I goof off here too. Do as I say and not as I do! ;))

Lecture over... if I was able to live in the above listed eras and was able to choose my profession, these are what I would be:

Medieval: I'd probably be a "barber". Back in those days, barbers didn't cut hair. They bled people. They didn't help anybody get better, but that wouldn't be my fault. It's all those damn bad humours!

Renaissance: why a renaissance man, of course. If I could go there with all my present-day knowledge, I'd like to meet Leonardo and say, "you think that lame-ass design will work? Here's something I came up with. I call it the jet engine..."

Baroque: I'd love to have been a court composer, perhaps hanging out with JS Bach and learning a little harpsichord. I don't think I could bring myself to wear tights. I could stand a powdered wig, though. I think all the baroque chicks would dig it.

The Dark Queen of the Haunted Castle

On top of the hills where an icy wind's blowing - overlooking the ocean at the foot of the cliffs sits the dark castle of Queen Hecate.

The peasants scurry and only whisper her name behind their hands, afraid to call her curses down on them. Too strange are the things that can be seen and heard in the dark nights when it is hard to tell if it is only clouds and howling wind that create the ghostly atmosphere or shapeshifting ghosts and the wheeping of lost souls.

But being of stunning beauty and strangely captivating charme the Queen is sough after by the reckless and mighty warriors of the coutry - but none of them could win her hand and heart in marriage - although most chose to remain in her service.

Her days the Dark Queen spends idly, painting, writing, composing, playing with her pets or studying the arts of philosophy or astrologie and - as is whispered the darker arts of Alchemie and Magick.

As for her nights - only the most adventuros souls would even dare to think about it ....

An aging bawd, abbess of a publick stew, dispensing women, ale and advice, solicited or not.

I could never see myself as nobility. No fun at all, and one has to wear all those clothes.

Hecate, don't stop... finish the story please. Are we all the peasants scattered around you in the countryside. Here for your amusement? I bet Creamylady is your procurer of "goods".

Interesting.
I think I'd end up as the hungry wanderer or one of the abused pesantry or maybe a hermit...Although it would be amusing to make a living off of a fake profession like an alchemist or a barber.

I'd be the idiot building illegal telescopes and finding the moons of Jupiter and sentenced to 30 years house arrest for heresy.

I also see myself as a midwife, healer sort of person. I always seem to be the only person in whatever group I'm with that knows first aid and CPR.

I can also see myself as a bard/storyteller, but I don't think they let women do that during that era.

(great thread Jade, thanks)

I think I'd have been the town witch-well to avoid toasting maybe a midwife...Dionysus would have been a soldier/tavern owner, and I'd have probably worked his kitchen.
Ooh Hecate sign me up to scurry about with succulent viands for you Mistress*s*!!!ooohhh you too Merelan!

A knight....I look damn good with a sword. As long as I don't have to follow the chivalric code constantly.

Lady in waiting to Eleanor of Aquitaine.I think she is the most fascinating woman to have ever lived.I wouldn't want to be her, but would love to spend time with her, watch her weave her webs around the men in her life.

Courtesan to the King. Beautiful, amoral, and very intelligent, I'd be in a dangerous position if the Queen happened to be threatened, but (based upon my personality test) I'd easily manipulate the Queen into also needing my love, and I'd provide her so many needed attentions that she'd be terrified if I threatened to move on.

Since even a Queen had little power, compared to any male, I'd have been the power behind the throne. Better that than none at all!

I'd have to be a handsome rogue, wandering Europe looking for danger and adventure. I'd be brave, charming, quick with a sword, and my kiss would be legendary among young maidens throughout the land.

To be true to the times, I'd have been married off young, had multiple children, and probably died in childbirth by 32.

I'd probaly be a Bard/Rogue. Entertaining the world, steal the hearts of innocent maids. And be an adventurous swordsman.

I'd probably be a Mercenary, pretty much like now.

As a matter of fact any takers for a 30 day contract for Cote d' Ivoire? $15k a share.

Going back to that kinda' shit is almost appealing after the week i've had.

I hear ya Exp. The last 2 weeks have really sucked for me.

I'd probably take it if I didn't have to get shot at again.
I hate those freakin Bees!

Unfortunately there is probably a significant probability of that happening.

Unlikely that there gonna'pay 15K for you to work on your tan and brush up on the local 'french colonial patois'.

Bees suck.

Club Fun with Guns in the Sun

Yeah, it mostly involves long walks in the woods, trying to keep your ass in one piece.
