It was April, 2001. I was in labor and in the hospital for the long haul. It was hour 14 and the petosin they had administered was doing its job admirably. I was in pure agony.

Hour fifteen rolled in. I was sick, pissed at the world and ready to rip the head off the next person who asked how I was doing. Finally, they gave me an injection for the pain.

The pain eased and I started to giggle. The giggles turned to fits of breath-stealing laughter. My mother became alarmed. My husband ran for the nurse. When they asked what was wrong with me, all I could do was point at the wall across the room, gasp and laugh some more.

What they didn't know was that thousands of dancing babies gyrated across that wall. They were everywhere, their little bodies all keeping time to the crazy music in my head. I laughed myself sick.

It was sad, though, when the babies began to disappear. When they left, the pain returned and I had to wait another six hours before getting the first of three epiderals.
