In Oz the census reported that 38% of returns returned 'no religion,' plus another 7% who ignored the question. Churches claim regular attendance of 17% but that figure is almost certainly optimistic.

only 16% declared "None" the last time the survey was conducted in 2007.
Doubling in 15+ years is impressive.

Meanwhile Team Catholic and Team Evangelical have put aside their ideological differences to team up to siphon off public funds for their indoctrination centers.

“Nones are also less civically engaged than those who identify with a religion – they're less likely to vote. So, while they identify as Democrats, getting them to the polls on election day may prove to be a challenge.”

If I can give some insight as to maybe why this is...

I was raised a Christian. My views growing up were fairly conservative, and though they have evolved, they really haven't changed much; rather, that word "Conservative" had a different meaning then. It was a rational, compassionate, reasonable conservatism, rooted in economics and small government/less regulation; a far cry from the hate, willful ignorance, and extremism that defines conservatism today.

But part of my beliefs was in a spirituality that emphasized love, compassion, charity, and the sacrifice of our savior, Jesus Christ to absolve us of our flaws. Coupled with a belief in a better and more meaningful world, perhaps a spiritual world greater and more infinitely wonderful than the one we live in. Most of the Christians I knew growing up had similar views. Like the word "Conservative" I fear the word "Christianity" has likewise evolved, and not for the better.

So what is Christianity today? Hate, intolerance, repression, no empathy, racism, homo/transphobia, degradation of women, disregard for health, disregard for the environment, and the idea that charity equals "Socialism" and thus is a weakness, and a belief of a crushing, iron-fist government. And...Donald Trump. A man who embodies each and every single thing that Jesus himself adamantly preached against! Everything He warned us against. Ironically, this is the "Christianity" that is so prevalent today. We have plenty examples of such "Christian" governments in the world. Substitute "Islam" for "Christianity" and there is little difference between the current governments of (for example) Afghanistan and Iran, and the dystopian nightmare that many modern "Christians" would inflict on us here in America.

With that said, is it really any wonder that the younger generations want so little to do with Christianity? I cannot blame them.
