The most important part of the setup, I should think, would be in creating a believable society. Alternately, if you went for humour, a sufficiently comical explanation of their beliefs would be required.

Personally, I should opt for an attempt to do both. While expressing everything quite seriously and logically, still let them be seen to be quite tongue-in-cheek.
