I have been stunned for several weeks, if not months by now, that my submission was rejected for grammer and spelling.
Ok, I admit that I rely heavily on spellchecker (thank you Mr. Gates, screw you public school system) and I'm certainly not Hemingway... but c'mon.
I've seen I dont know how many posts/threads that seem to me to have been written by a monkey... a retarted monkey at that.
It's my opinion that there should be some leway, so consideration. I write the way I speak as I think it makes it more readable. I'm sure others do the same thing. I'm just amazed at what's been approved, sometimes 2 paragraphs that contain just as many sentences, and then I got rejected.

When I first saw your thread title, I thought, "Here comes another complaint by some guy who can't get the worst story ever written accepted." But I must agree with you on many points.

When I recently became an editor of a few stories, I found myself denying several threads due to continuity, etc., & fixing several others.

I have no problem w/anyone who writes like people talk ("gonna", "ain't", cutting the "g" off a verb, & the like), but some people seem like their threads belong in the Non-English category, if not in the dumpster behind the computer store.

Thanks, I really do appreciate that.
I'm really not a whiney bastard, at least I really hope I'm not or all those years in the Marines (not comments from the peanut gallery please!) were a waste!

I'd be happy as hell for someone to edit/proof my writing before I released it. Just damn hard to find like minded people that dont just tear it to shreads.

Well, if you can't meet the editor's standard, then either write better or don't write with that editor. Everyone's got different ideas about what's acceptable in writing. If you want proofreading you can post or ask here.

I find that narrating the way you talk is a bad idea.

To each his own.

A spelling mistake every now and again is understood... but horrible grammar, or a choppy writing style just makes me think the author was jacking off while writing and didn't want to spend the time to think it through :)

I think we could all agree that there is some really unfortunate writing that's been approved on CHYOO. And I have had threads rejected myself, generally because the editor wants longer threads. Fair enough: their perogative. I leave a couple of rejected threads in my account to remind me of good stories I want to someday contribute to, when I can write a better submission.

Bottom line: I think the editor has creative control over the story, and it's nothing personal if they reject a thread, especially if they give you some constructive criticism to help you submit again...

For me, personally, as editor I give contributors a great deal of leeway in the direction they'd like to take the story... it's obviously the stuff that I didn't think of that is going to propel the story in a new direction. I am a fairly active editor, so I'll tinker with the writing to fit the rest of the story while trying to maintain the author's ideas and sense of voice. I've managed to persuade a German whose writings I admire to contribute... he tries his best English, I edit extensively and I think we're both very happy with the product.

You say: "I have been stunned for several weeks, if not months by now, that my submission was rejected for grammer and spelling." Does this mean:
a) you've made submissions over the past weeks or months, and all or too many were rejected?
b) you made a submission weeks or months ago, and only now it has been rejected?
c) you made a submission weeks or months ago, it was rejected, and you've been seething ever since?

This is an example of the kind of language I'd want clarified. It's not clear to me what your greivance is, other than "rejections".

I think we all benefit from editing, a second set of eyes to catch what's missing in our writing.

It may not even be because your submission was inadequate, in earlier posts ( not long after chyoo came back to life ) the mods wanted to know how to sort the submissions from still active people from those who had become fed up and wandered away, they did this by rejecting the threads by inactive people and if it was never re-submitted, then the author was probably gone and unaware, but in your case your still here and wondering. Going by the fact that this is your first post here I'll assume you didn't know of this so my advice is: Try submitting again, then if its still rejected...GET ANGRY
Or just modify your thread and add it to a different story.

Thanks

Thanks to those that have responded thus far. It's really been a sore spot for me for quite a while now. It took my friends years to talk me into start writing my screen play and now that's going really well and getting some attention.
Then for a diversion I give a shot at this (I've been loking for some time now) and it was like... wait a sec... this crap, utter crap, over here got posted and approved, but mine didn't?! Holy...
Well now I'm thinking that I may have, somehow, pooched things up as I cant even go in and edit it now! Or rather try to edit. go figure... thank the Gods for ye olde cut n paste, huh? :)
