Please help! My submission was rejected for underage sex but there is absolutely no sex in this first chapter. I would like to know what I need to chenge to get it published. Does anyone know what specific things are prohibited?

It is a multi-chapter story, and in the first chapter the main character, who is 17 at that point, runs away from home because his father beats him up. Is the violence the problem?

There is absolutely no sex in the first chapter. The word penis, vagina, etc. don't even appear. I don't think I even used the word 'hot'. I very carefully kept all reference to sex out of this first chapter. I did categorize the story as gay male-- there will of course be sex, but not until the main character turns 18 in a few chapters.

I can't change his age or the violence, because the premise of the whole story is that he runs away from home. Changing either one of those would make my premise unbelievable.

His father does whip him on his bare butt (penis never mentioned or seen and the scene is not sexual at all). I can change that to whipping him with his shirt off, just on his back, if I have to.

The rejections I've gotten for underage seem rather random. I've been publishing under a different alias on this site, and have gotten two different chapters rejected for underage when the characters were not underage. It's quite frustrating. Can someone tell me rules? I'd really like to publish this story.

If anyone is willing to read it and give me specific feedback on what to change to make it publishable here, I'd be happy to send it to you. My beta reader who is an experience publisher on this site thought it was fine.

Thanks,
RB

I suggest resubmitting it and noting in the "comments" box that it had been rejected for underage sex but there is no under age sex in the first chapter and won't be any in the series. That way a human editor will see it.

I have GM stories that start off with the protagonist being under 18, but there's no sex until 18 (one does it on his 18th birthday), and the stories weren't rejected. So, it can be done.

Thanks! After I posted my frustrated message and before i read your respose, that's what I tried. Fingers crossed.

I've observed that first chapters of stories are far more likely to receive underage or physical/mental cruelty rejections than one-shots.

If you think about it, the first chapter has him at 17, and if he's still at 17 at the end of the chapter... That's all Laurel really has to go on. In a one-shot, she can scan forward and see the birthday happen prior to the sex ( which is assumed, unless the category is non-erotic )

I have stories where the main character is as young as five years old at the beginning. ( He's in his 20s during the sexual part of the story ) so there's no restriction on underage characters, so long as they aren't participating ( which includes seeing, hearing, or knowing about such in more the tiniest detail ) in sex. I have umpteen single digit age peripheral characters in tales as well. I just keep them far, far away from the sex.

I do think the bare butt spanking may be dancing the line of admissable. If it gets rejected for underage again, that's probably why. Put some pants on him, and I'd say you're okay from the underage angle.

There's always the possibility that it may come back a second time for physical/mental abuse, if you didn't address that in the "notes" section. ( Just mentioning this since you brought it up. May not be an issue ) Again, with only Ch. 01 to work with, Laurel can't look forward to see that what's happening in Ch. 01 isn't going to be the entire thrust of the story.

You have to really make use of the "notes" section with Chapter 1s if you have any edgy content or underage characters. If you're submitting multiple chapters at once, it's probably a good idea to note this as well. Then, if she so chooses, Laurel can skip to Ch. xx and skim it for perspective of what happens in Ch. 01.

I've never had a rejection for underage or abuse because I take advantage of the notes section to point anything edgy out from the get-go. ( Only rejection I had was for HTML, and that one was actually a mistake that was accepted upon resubmission )

The notes section is your greatest ally for avoiding rejections on Lit.

Hi, Roughboy, and welcome to Literotica and the AH. It's possible the whipping was seen as BDSM and, since he is underage, that would disqualify the story. I think in the notes section, you should mention the whipping is incidental to the story. Either that or change it so it isn't on his bare butt.

hmmm

this is rather amusing. you're going to tell as sex tale, and the first chapter says the fellow is 17. at the end of ch 1, he is 17. now, if you were screening stories, what would you think are the chances 1) of him having a birthday at the beginning of ch 2, when the sex likely starts, or 2) of the sex starting with no mention of any birthday?

you know, the law says if a man is caught near your house with burglary tools, he can be arrested for burglary. i suppose you have a problem with that, also?

You have a crystal ball? The chances seem just as good that the lad won't have sex until he's 18 as that he will--from what the author has given so far.

What is most likely is that a bot scanned this and raised the flag and that if a human editor had scanned it they wouldn't make the assumptions that you have. They'd wait for the sex to show up to make an age judgment on the sex.

Think you are off base on this one and not being too charitable.

I did mention in the notes section that there is ugly violence in the first chapter--and I mentioned in the notes that there was no sex in the first chapter (just so people looking for a stroke story don't waste their time with it).

I have absolutely no intention of letting my main character have sex until he turns 18, 3 or 4 chapters from now. However, I will introduce some older friends who will engage--obviously not in front of my still-virginal 18 year old.

I'm assuming it was rejected by a bot as well. Hopefully I won't have to tone down the violence for it to fly. The story is more a romance than anything else, but the first chapter is pretty edgy.

Somebody told me that they just look at the number first, and from my personal experience I tend to agree.

In my case it wasn't even a story, just a reply to a post asking about incest, where I said I had fancied my cousin. Nothing happened but I did fancy her.

I had fantacies of carrying things further but that was when I was older, it seems that just seeing an age of less than 18 anywhere it the trigger, the onus is on you you to justify why whatever you write should be permitted.

Actually I am pissed because it indicates that I made a comment and it was removed, I hope nobody gets the idea that I am a perv.

17 is a red flag automatically and if it is mentioned early in the chapter they may have gone no further. A note may help. I had one kicked off for starting it with "I was 16" and there was no sex. However last week i had the same scenario but it was towards the end of the chapter and it got through. I'm thinking because at that point they had read it and saw it was a flashback and nothing was going to happen.

On another note in all honesty they are not always completely coonsistant and it could just get through second time around.

On the topic of the whipping however that is violence being commited on a minor and just as dicey as underage sex. spanking is obviously allowed here or there would not be a bdsm section but not to children.

So I guess my newest, which starts...

It was on my twelfth birthday I noticed her as an individual. Up until that time, she had been part of that group known as relatives. It was at that time in a boy's life when girls where no longer yucky.

Will most likely be kicked, unless they read further to this...

The years rolled by and before I knew it, it was nineteen-sixty-eight. I had graduated high school and turned eighteen.

No sex takes place before he's 18. I'll have to make a note of that fact.

Exactly. I copy and pasted the "I was 16" scene right from my rejected version into the one that just posted. Difference was it was near the end so they knew it was a flashback. Or they were bored by then and weren't paying attention.
