I have an interesting idea for a story - a woman is devastated when her husband is killed in an accident, but then he is reincarnated. Then, twenty years later or so, the two of them, shall we say, pick up where they left off. What do you think?

I like it. There is a lot of potential. How she recognizes and accepts the idea could be interesting if its done well.

Would love to see it if you write it. :cattail:

Another take on the idea: Two lovers die together in an accident. 18-20 years later, two strangers cross paths for the first time and immediately feel the need to escape somewhere private and begin screwing each other. Turns out they are the reincarnations of the first two dead lovers.

Why am I seeing something very close to how "Down to Earth" plays out?

Not familar, sorry. I just wikipedia-ed it, but there are a lot of works with this title. Are you talking about the Chris Rock movie?

Yes. He dies prematurely, so the Angels above give him a temporary body to live in while trying to work out who he's actually SUPPOSED to become. Long story short, he has the same girlfriend in three different bodies. His, temp. replacement's, and permanent body's.

Yeah, but then all the emotion and years of loneliness would be taken out of it. And I like having an older woman. :)

Not if the reincarnated people went through their childhood/adolesence knowing in the back of their mind that there was someone important missing in their lives. They'd still be grieving because they'd been separated from their one true love, except they wouldn't understand why they feel that way. Adding to the difficulties would be that no one around them (e.g. their new families) wouldn't understand what they were going through, either. Then finally, they meet their reincarnated lover, and for the first time, somebody does understand what they've been feeling...

But if you're going for an older-women story, obviously your original idea is better ;)

Someone's watched The Fountain one too many times.

That or Aeon Flux.

I don't mean to discourage you from writing this, because it is a good idea. But I have to point out that there was a really creepy film version of this story, with Nicole Kidman and a crazy-freaky-skin-crawling ten year old, called Birth. You should check it out!

Now this one sounds interesting. :) I like it.

I've seen that movie! Creepy! But I think it wouldn't be too bad if he's an adult when they next meet.

Are there any stories where this has been done before?

I read a story once that followed a similar theme to this, but it was a bit more fantasy-based thank what I think the OP was suggesting. <spoilers>The main female character is a genie and by the end of the story the main male character is in a polymorous relationship with her and another woman.</spoilers>

The story's called "Your Wish" (also called "You Wish"), it's written by URN_My_Power, and I've never seen it here on Lit. But you can read it here:

(Hope it's not against site rules to link to stories off-site .)
