A note from an American mother: Had to register the kids for school today. To do so, I needed proof of our residency in town: tax returns, driver’s license, pay stub (with address), homeowner’s insurance policy . . .

As I was providing copies of the documents and the clerk was checking off the list, I thought about showing your ID to vote.

That would be invasive, even discriminatory. A racist act, even.

 But all this strict and detailed paperwork to attend high school is perfectly fine!

A weird country, in so many ways (especially when race comes into play, which is pretty much always).

I agree with you on this one. It is illogical to me how hard some fight to
Prove that showing identification to vote is discriminatory. One must show id for a great number of things, including those you've mentioned. Why not to vote?

On the same theme, I was in line at a bank yesterday listening to a woman bitch and moan about having to show id to cash a check. It was a $1000 check drawn on the bank and the woman had no account and no id. She threw a tantrum!

What voter fraud would that be?

The actual voter fraud (not registration fraud) encountered over the last decade nationwide would not result in enough votes to swing even a middle sized town's elections.

The real reason that the GOP wants voter ID is to disenfranchise voters that normally wouldn't vote for them anyway. In the Texas case it was found that their Voter ID rules unfairly affected both Black and Hispanic populations as well as voting age youths at a disproportionate rate. For example, a handgun permit was acceptable ID, while a College student ID card was not). The judge found that this constituted a "poll tax".

A similar law in Indiana was upheld by SCOTUS because the requirement only applied to regular ballots. Those without the proper ID on hand could vote a provisional ballot and had only to show up at a designated government office within 10 days and bring a photo ID or sign a statement saying they cannot afford one. Thus, no "poll tax".

African-Americans (over 3 times) and Latinos (Over 1.5 times) are much more likely to lack one of the qualifying IDs than are other races, according to several estimates. Even when the state offers a free photo ID, these voters, who are disproportionately low-income, may not be able to procure the underlying documents, such as a birth certificate, to obtain one.

Requiring Voter ID's is merely an attempt by the 'right" to disenfranchise young and minority voters (because they tend to vote democratic) masquerading as the solution to a problem that for all intents and purposes does not exist.

Young kids need ID to get into school buildings but eill be discouraged fromv
Voting, is that it?

Blacks need ID for benefits, but will be discouraged from voting

Who the fuck you kidding

It's a BB thread, you don't need any of that to enroll a kid in school. Mickinney Vento Act.

I'm not inclined to agree with the OP, but I did need many things to register my kids for school: proof of residency, birth certificates, shot records, transcripts, custodial papers, proof of income whether I was eligible for free/reduced lunch or not.

Tax-returns, drivers license - not among required documentation.

You did not NEED any of those things. The school may have liked to have them and asked for them, but you did not NEED to give it to them. Again, McKinney-Vento Act.

As my children do not lack a fixed, adequate nighttime residence, this act does not apply. We were not registering as a homeless family, which is the population protected with this act.

Correct, you did not need to prove your residency to enroll your kids in school. The school wanted you to fill out your financial information because the school gets more money for Title 1 kids.

Again, you did not NEED any of the things on that list.

How in the hell do people get by in this day and age without an ID?

If young people cant get ID or think its so onerous to show one at the polls

They cant function in life....aka, Dumoh voters

No! There is only one reason

Voter fraud

How in the hell do people get by in this day and age without an ID?

They may have ID, they just may not have government issued photo ID and the type of government issued photo ID that would allow one to vote under these proposals.

to say getting ID is racist, is in and of itself racist

cause they really mean is that EVERYONE can get ID only blacks are so inept that they cant!

and its pathetic how the usual suspects scream about ID...like Obama, the NAACP and Clinton

yet

When Michelle sold books, to get in line to get it signed, you needed ID

When Hillary sold books, to get it signed, you needed ID

When the NAACP held a rally against voter ID, they issued a list of must have's to attend the rally, one was an ID

They may have ID, they just may not have government issued photo ID and the type of government issued photo ID that would allow one to vote under these proposals.

What the hell sort of ID do they have?

For example, when I go to rent an apartment, they don't accept my Sam's Club card as ID. So WTF are they using?

if anyone cant get ID, they are so inept

they shouldnt be allowed to VOTE

BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, IT’S RACIST TO TEST APTITUDE: Former Colorado Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo has an oped in Big Government arguing that all voters should be required to pass the same basic civics test (administered in English) that legal immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship are required to pass:

Shouldn’t all voters possess that same rudimentary knowledge of the Constitution and our federal system of government as naturalized citizens? Why not require all citizens to pass the same civics exam as immigrants have to pass if they want to join the voter rolls? . . . .

This proposal is blatantly “pro-immigrant”: it says native-born citizens should live up to the same expectations we have for new citizens. What’s wrong with that?

Of course, if implemented this proposal will not end all voter ignorance. But it would be a giant step in the right direction. It places equal weight on the responsibilities of voting as on the right to vote.

When I first proposed this a few years ago in a speech to the Tea Party convention in Nashville, I was slammed by the New York Times– which is always a good sign you are onto something good. The NY TIMES, lacking any other argument, played the race card, charging that I was advocating a “return to Jim Crow laws.” Isn’t it blatantly racist to assume blacks can’t pass a simple civics exam in the same rates as others?

Why yes, yes it is quite racist, Tom. But the Democrats literally survive on racism–it is the air that keeps the party alive these days. And perpetuating the stereotype that blacks are inferior, cannot be expected to compete with other races, require government programs to survive, etc., are all part of the Democrats’ agenda of keeping blacks distracted and enraged by incessant, false cries of “racism!,” which is designed to keep blacks and other “aggrieved” minorities firmly planted in perpetuity on the Democrat plantation.

Simply put that would be illegal.

How do you do things like get utilities hooked up? Cable? Bank account?

I recently went to Balt Housing re my SEC 8 property I rent out

99.99% of the people coming in were BLACK

There was a HUGE SIGN in English and Spanish

NO ENTRANCE WITHOUT PROPER ID

and they listed what proper was

as the rooms were filled, they seemed to have no issue with having ID

seems when it comes to voting, they forget how to get ID

why?

WE KNOW WHY:cool:
