Damien watched the world beneath him, a heavy weight settling on his chest as he saw the blackness. It was different up close, and different to him as an angel. From here though, he could see the darkness as it slowly consumed the world. There were bastions of light yes, and places of neutrality, but none with power enough to stand against this darkness.
Damien was an angel. He lived in the heavens above the world, and was doomed to a like of observance. Angels weren't allowed to interfere with the mortals.
With a sigh, Damien focused his mind so his blue eyes changed the target of his focus. In the whole of the world, one person was trying to do something about what was going on. It was on her that his eyes focused. She was a princess, half forgotten by her parents in these harsh times. They were content to have her relatively out of the way, not distracting them. They knew she'd gone on an extended journey, but she hadn't told them of the specifics. Even the sparse guards who came along to escort her didn't know the truth, but he did.
Damien had watched her from the moment he had learned of her intent. That intent, was as pure and noble as any could be. "To rid the world of the all-consuming darkness that would swallow them all." Those had been her words, and from that point on he had watched her.
The catch was of course that she had no way to accomplish that goal, and it was for that reason that she was traveling. Maybe she hoped to find hidden armies, armies strong enough to stand against the darkness. Or maybe she hoped to find a means of magic, with which she hoped to wish it all away.
With a sad sigh, Damien let his gaze focus more clearly. she was traveling through the forest. Damien started however when his gaze locked on her. It was not the sight of her that startled him, as beautiful as she was. No, it was the sight of the shadows moving around her. Damien shifted his gaze further down the road. There, not five hundred yards off, was a bend in the road, where an ambush awaited her.
Damien didn't hesitate, not in the least. Without a second though, he focused his mind on that spot and plane-shifted. As always happened when one plane-shifted, Damien was a little ways away from his target location, but it gave him time to polymorph himself.
When he was done, he looked rather similar to himself, though his wings were gone from view. At any time, he knew he could break the effect and use the full force of his powers, but doing so would expose him to his superiors, and he dared not think of the punishment that awaited him if they found out.
Damien stood a full six feet tall, and weighed about one hundred fifty pounds. His shoulders and chest were broad and his arms muscular. His legs were similarly muscular. His hair was short and blond, and his eyes were a startlingly deep shade of blue.
Damien hurried off in the direction of the ambush point. He didn't have the overview vantage point he had from the heavens, nor would he have it as long as he remained here, but what mattered more to him was "Her" and what she represented.
