What gives with Hollywood these days?? They used to make great films from books. Classics. Best-sellers. Great books. Great movies. But now!!!!

What got me going was reading a blurb about Sarah Michelle Geller of"Buffy" was going to marry Freddie Prinze Jr. Big deal. Who cares about this stuff, anyway? But it went on to say they were making a movie together, a live-action film of Scooby-doo!! SCOOBY-DOO!?!? Are they serious?

Then the more I thought about it the more depressed I became. This was nothing unusual. Look at many of the movies they've released in the last few years. The Flintstones, The Flintstones in Rock Vegas, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Dudley Do-Right, Josie and the Pussycats. If it isn't old cartoons, it's old Television shows. Lost in Space, Charlie's Angels, My Favorite Martian.

Doesn't anybody in charge read anymore? What are they going to do when they run out of cartoons and ancient T.V. shows? Close up shop?

Mark my word, I soon expect to hear that they're planning on doing The A-Team and the Jetsons. Just see if I'm wrong.

OH! Hollywood, where went thou?

Only the exec's over at PBS do any reading......

And at that - it's mostly romance novels.

Buffy Was Made To Play Daphnee!

I Totally LOVED & Still Do Love Scooby Doo!

Shaggy Should Be Played By Tom Green:) Fred? Thelma, Played By Janine Garafelo & What Doggie For Scooby?

RNAB...love your avatar.

And I am also a Scooby fan. Love that cartoon...except when they put in Scrappy and took out Fred and Velma...suck city!

What I am tired of is the sequels to the sequels to the sequels....if not done right they can really tarnish a good movie.

Major studios only release about 12 films a year now. They used to put out two or three hundred. With only a dozen shots at the golden ring they rely upon the familiar -- films that come with a pre-release "Awareness" factor. Hence sequelitis and TV shows transformed into flicks.

Hollywood produced plenty of schlock years ago, too (see "Barton Fink" for how Hollywood used to ruin good writers.) But when you're putting out two or three hundred pictures, plus shorts, you're bound to put out a hell of a lot more quality films.

(Did you know that 90% of all Silent Films are gone? A lot of classics vanished in a puff of nitrate smoke.)

Casey Kasem (spl?) should play the evil Caretaker in one of his nice sweaters - just to keep the Scooby nerds happy (he did the voice of Rrrraggy).

I'd had a similar conversation a few years back with a publicist. It was at the time all those teen slasher films were out. I asked him if anyone in Hollywood had ever had an original idea? What's with all these sequels? He told me that it was like finding a vein of gold, you don't just take what you need, you mine it til it runs out. He said the sequels would continue til they stopped making money. I said you mean it's like trying to kill a rabid dog, you keep shooting it til it stops moving?

He told me that all they're interested in is making the deal. They don't care what they make as long as they can make a deal. If it makes money then they get to play on and make even more deals. He said that demographics show that cinema audiences are getting younger, so they make movies geared to them. I said the reason cinema audiences are younger was because of the films they were showing. I guess it's a question of which came first, the chicken or the egg? A few years later it seemed that the slasher vein had finally run dry and I was curious as to what they'd come up with to replace it. Enter"Scream" a parody of all those slasher flicks (sigh) Now I'm given to understand that "Screan 2" is in the pipeline. Will it never end?? No wonder cinemas are closing down!

Mensa, I believe that Scream 3 is already out....I KNOW that Scream 2 is. Saw it in the theaters.

You evil, evil woman. News like that will have me opening a vein...in my arm!!

I'm noticing a lot of straight to video movies are more entertaining than many that hit the theatre. A couple of good ones out recently at theatres....Chocolat, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? (based on Homer's Odyssey; and even more entertaining if you are familar with the Odyssey); Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Scream I, II, and III have been out a while, I think maybe the parody movie you're referencing is Scary Movie which has now also been out a while and is onto the video shelves. And certainly its quite possible a sequel to that is underway...Who knows?

You are absolutely right. It was Scary Movie. See the problem? There are so many of similar ilk that they begin to coalesce into a virtually indistinguishable amorphous mass. Celestial Body had me contemplating ending it all in sheer frustration. But thankfully, you have given me reprieve. LOL

Sorry, RNAB, but I refuse to watch anything with Tom Green in it! Unless they sneak him in, like in Charlie's Angels. *shudder* I find him totally offensive! And I really hope Jeanine Garaofolo (sp?) has more dignity than to play Velma.
