Unemployment benefits have been extended to the tune of $7.2 billion, an additional 13 weeks added to the exhausted 26 weeks.

Hillary Clinton and other Democrats attempted to delay the bill's passage because, of course it was not enough for the one million jobless men and women who have exhausted their state and federal benefits.

Lifetime unemployment benefits is all that would ever be enough for some of you.

They would still want tax cuts (or at least, an exemption from paying tax for unemployment compensation they receive).

With the jobless rate at about 5 percent, all Congress and the President have accomplished is keeping many of these people unemployed of their own volition. There are jobs to be had out there, and I would prefer that those people drawing unemployment work those jobs while searching for something that they really want to do.

I believe they have those in West (by God) Virginia.

My favorite reactionary!

Well, gosh golly, a thread with my name in the title, started by my favorite person at Lit.! I just had to get in on this one.

Rosie, that line about "lifetime unemployment benefits" you lifted straight from Tom DeLay, the House Majority Leader. Shows who your scriptwriters are!
;)

As far as I'm concerned, it's an outrage Congress let nearly a million people's unemployment benefits run out Dec. 28. What they're doing now is just political CYA.

I have said it before...

and will say it again... of those 5% unemployed, I bet 2% don't want to fucking work anyway. Those are the so-called needy Hillary wants us to look out for?!

mbb: West (by God) Virginia has no market on those who know how to work the system and who expect the rest of us to take care of them.

I took that line from the Review-Journal, our local newspaper-- ever hear of it?

I think government funded comprehensive unemplyment insurance is one sign of an intelligent government, particularly in the increasingly globalized economy, where employment shifts occur increasingly fast due to actions and policies outside your domestic government or economy's control.

I also think that a comprehensive employment policy should put the unemployed receiving benefits to work on government projects while also providing active re-employment /placement assistance where required or requested.

I am behind this 100%. Put them to work. We did it in the 30's.

I still remember Reagan's reference to the want ads during his Presidency.

I had my unemployment troubles during Bush I.

I'll shovel shit before I sign up for unemployment "benefits" again. I think it hurt my psyche.

Put them to work on government projects? We tried that when Franklin Roosevelt was elected in 1932 with any number of make-work programs. It worked so well the depression lasted until WWII started.

Good on ya pal!!!!

No one owes me a thing either. I will work at whatever I have to, to make ends meet, instead of starting threads at LIT complaining that no one cares about me.

I'm already convinced that "they" don't care about me, just as long as I keep paying taxes.

I did talk to my State Delegate this morning at the 7-11 coffee bar. She has her work cut out for her regarding the state budget shortfall. She's a nice woman, too (and kinda cute).

Well, it depends. Do I get the whole $7.2 billion for myself, or do I have to share it with others?

Maybe the government should just send everyone a check for $7.2 billion. Imagine the glee — until people went to the local fast food stand and found out cheeseburgers were selling for $2.1 billion.

Lance

Personally, I think the unemployed should be put to work as pickle packers.

The last time I got "laid off" was on a Monday afternoon about 4:30.

I went to work on my new job at 9:00 the next morning.

Of course, I was kinda busy that Monday night - but still got to watch the football game.

This says volumes about you, M.

Now what is this about cops going into bars in Virginia and talking patrons outside for field sobriety tests?

I`m with Lance and PC

We all stumble and fall in our lives, some because of our own actions, some thru no fault of their own.

A compassionate and caring society should and does offer a hand to help people back to their feet. BUT, that does not mean we need to carry them forever.

Yes, some of the makework projects of the thirtys were a mistake, but those people EARNED the money.

I may be wrong here, but wasn`t Hoover Dam a works project?

There are plenty of things that can be done by those on public aid. Hell, just cleaning streets and public parks seem to be beyond the ability of city government.

I do believe that many do not work as a matter of choice. They want to make the dollars that skilled workers earn or they will not work at all.

Anyone at all informed about the transportation business knows of lumpers ( guys that hang around warehouses and unload trucks) that are making a couple hundred bucks a day CASH and have the nerve to still draw unemployment.

Just one of my pet peeves here and touched a raw nerve. Sorry for the ranting.

The problem with Depression-era make-work programs is that they drained more money in taxes from the economy, which served to extend the Depression. But back in those days not too many people actually "worked" for the government. D.C. in those days consisted of the White House, the halls of Congress, the Supreme Court building and not much else.
Now, however, roughly 12 percent of the workforce is employed by federal, state or local governments. Increasing that figure another two or three percent in make-work legislation will drag down the economy, which now has to pay these new government employees.
And that creates more unemployment.
