Redbuds and Rainbows

One of yesterday's storms was a nasty little thing. Came through with a roar much louder than its size; sort of like a Chihuahua imitating a Rottweiler.
At any rate, it was windy, almost tornado strength windy, but no damage.

But that's not what this is about.

See, I've planted many flowering trees in the house yard; redbuds, cherries, pears, bradford pears, red-flowering plums, not to mention the wild "Indian plums"
and crab apple tree that already grow there. So they were blooming yesterday.
And the storm passed over. And after it was beyond us, it flashed not one but
two extremely articulate rainbows over the ranch. I happened to have been standing in a place where I saw them arch over the flowering trees.

And with no camera, of course.

Guess this is one of those scenes I'll have to remember with a painting. Of course
I'd have to put a nude in the middle of the mix. Six foot, slender, smallish breasts,
Maybe a smile... I didn't spend eight years studying figure drawing for nothing.
Nudes r me.

But anyway, just wanted to share that very brief moment with y'all. They don't happen all that frequently lately.

Hugs, Y'all.

Wish I'd been there.

If you do the painting, I hope you post it so the rest of us can share the experience.

Its amazing how the most violent of nature's acts can result in the most beautiful of outcomes. She's an unpredictable, fickle beast, to put it mildly.

Sounds a beautiful picture, and like you, I'm often caught in the middle of unexpected beauty without my camera. One day I'll learn to keep it with me at all times.........well, maybe not ALL times....;)

Not seen you around before Alph(eratz), welcome to the AH.

Mat(riarch)

I will be sure to post it here if I paint it.

And Matriarch, I've been in and around for awhile, just don't usually have a lot to say, as everyone here seems to be able to say it without my help.

Lot of smart folks hereabout.

Thank you for your welcome.

Redbud is my absolute favorite flowering tree -- heralding spring on the ragged edges of the forest understory long before the trees leave, even before the wild (almost flourescent green-white) dogwood. Can't wait to hike the nearby state forest -- up to the promontory dizzily overlooking the river canyon -- and sun myself on the large, flat rock. Bliss.

And then in June, when the honeysuckle blooms, sleeping outside on the screened porch -- surrounded by its heady, intoxicating aroma & waking to a morning thunderstorm. *le sigh*

Just seen your self-portrait in your profile. Damn good, You should check out the sub-folder at the top of the AH home page, the art and photography threads. Might interest you.

Thank you for the suggestion. I did post a few of my drawings on there as attachments, but they were quickly swallowed up and I've lost track of them.

Sort of like watching the dogs get swept down river. You know they ain't gonna necessarily drown, but you'll miss 'em while they're gone anyway.

If I'm not mistaken, several of the main art posters are now starting up their own 'gallery' thread, so you can add to it as you wish, and they won't get lost. I'd hate to see real talent ignored.

Something new has bloomed outside. I can smell it on the breeze through the window. And I hope the passing shadows means we will get some rain soon.

Morning, Cowboy! Bout time you showed up again.

Not many flowering trees in my yard just yet (which will change), but there's a baby's breath in the front yard in full flower and a cherry tree in back just full of pink flowers.

The yard hasn't been tended (except for the occasional mowing) for the past probably ten years. Now there are daffodils growing wild through it. They passed their prime already, but when they were at their best the front yard looked like a small field of yellow leading up to the house. Now the wild bluebells are taking over, and the tulips i put out last fall. It's their first year, so they're a little late blooming. Soon it will be irises.

A little later on the wild honeysuckle will take over, and the blackberry brambles that we can't control. With a little work i might be able to keep them from overgrowing the grape arbors this summer. The roses have gotten a couple of buds on them, but they won't open for a while yet, maybe another week or so.

On another note: anybody have any tips for keeping deer out of vegetable gardens?

Not so much smart, as we like to talk alot. ;) And I envy your image, we've had nothing but absolute gray for days.

I just send my middle child out to pee around the borders. He delights in it -- and it's been effective. ;)

Takes multiple applications to make the circumference (and re-pee-ted after each rainfall), but he never seems to tire of it. ;)

Go to a barbershop or hair parlor, ask for the floor sweepings. Also go to a pet grooming area, ask for theirs. If the owners have no other use for them, which rarely they do, they will give them to you, then scatter them around the flowers you don't want to have bothered by deer. The hair wads make good mulch, by the way. And they'll keep the deer away.
