From Alternet:

Donald Trump wasn't the only big winner on Tuesday. Marijuana law reform also had a stellar night, with medical marijuana winning in all four states it was on the ballot and marijuana legalization winning four out of five.

Pot legalization won in California (Prop 64), Maine (Question 1), Massachusetts (Question 4), and Nevada (Question 2), losing only in Arizona (Prop 205), where a deep-pocketed opposition led by a hostile sitting governor managed to blunt the reform thrust. Medical marijuana won overwhelmingly in Florida (Amendment 2), the first state in the South to embrace full-blown medical marijuana, as well as in Arkansas (Question 6), Montana (I-182), and North Dakota (Measure 5).

This week's election doubles the number of legal marijuana states from four to eight and brings the number of full-fledged medical marijuana states to 28. It also means some 50 million people just got pot-legal, more than tripling the number of people living in states that have freed the weed.

"This is one of the most significant days in the history of marijuana prohibition and this movement," said Rob Kampia, long-time head of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), which was behind the legalization initiatives in Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada and which also backed the California initiative. "When four states legalize it, it's a big deal, and California is an even bigger deal. The next time we'll see a day as important as yesterday is when a president signs a bill to end federal marijuana prohibition."

A major question is whether Donald Trump might be that president. During the campaign, he suggested that he would follow President Obama's lead and not interfere with state-level marijuana legalization and regulation (roughly the same position as Hillary Clinton). But his political alliances leave some reformers less than sanguine about a Trump administration.

Neither presidential candidate said much about pot while campaigning, but now Trump will be faced with the question. What will he do?

Probably going to have to be some rewrites in international anti-drug treaties. News up here was reporting that Canada would face tough opposition from the international community over the Liberals promise to legalize it.

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/politics/marijuana-legalization-pot-anti-drug-treaties-1.3780661

1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances
1988 Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances

http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/marijuana-legalization-canada-un-drug-conventions-1.3584148

Canada has three legal options in which it can continue its cannabis "policy direction" and still be in line with UN conventions, says the authors. They include:
■Changing its constitution. Countries like Portugal still enforce drug laws but replaced prison sentences with educational courses as punitive measures, while the Netherlands continues to keep the drug illegal but does not enforce its laws on those caught with small quantities.
■Convincing other countries to allow Canada an exemption from drug control treaties, or to revise them altogether.
■Formally withdrawing from the treaties.

If the US was to switch policies on drug users and opt for less prison time you could kill two birds with one stone.

It would generate revenue and it's no worse, and a fair bit better, than alcohol consumption. Hopefully, he'll just let it all happen as it is, and by the time half the states are on board the feds will relent.

Roadside testing and the laws surrounding it will have be worked on. Stoned driver not near as dangerous as drunk driver but still a bad idea.

Legalizing it takes a chunk of profits out of criminal hands.

now more of the same because it's the only way forward.

and hopefully michigan will get another shot at it soon. i won't hold my breath, though. the republicans that run this state hate the will of the people.

He wont do shit, he'll kick it back to the states.

At least that's what he said he would do.

Which means liberals get to whore that market out to their elite buddies just like they did in CO/WA.

Rich well connected (D)'s only now!! Fuck everyone else, because that's how (D)'s do progress!! ;)

Not at the rates most places are talking about taxing it. At those rates the black market will be alive and well I assure you.

Why buy and 80 dollar bag of shit shake legally when your old illegal dealer will sell you 1/8th of top shelf for 60?

LOL good luck!

You'll see it continue to spread in the US state by state and eventually the FDA with change the schedule. It is inevitable.

that is true. Maybe now fucktards in government will wake up that America never stood a chance in terms of the "war on drugs" just goes to show you how retarded government employees are

No matter what seems to be happening

It is still a Schedule 1 drug, right up there with Coke and heroin and other bad stuff. Please send your congressman or woman and senator a note asking them to vote for the CARERS act to change Marijuana to a lesser classification.
It's short. Read it and promote it.

Until then, the federal govt will actively pursue shutting down state and local dispensaries and other enterprises related to growing, distributing, possessing, smoking it, like a few years ago when the federal govt gave Santa Ana $400,000 to harass MMJ dispensaries. And they can raid you and take all your valuables just for the fun of it.
AND, cities in California still have the right to declare that no sales will be allowed in their cities, as most have already done for MMJ. Only a few cities in OC, (>3mil people) have allowed sale of it.

More needs to be done.

Supposedly Canada will legalize weed Canada Day 2018. Better get started the ins and outs of retailing it through various liquor control boards or their like. Let just anyone retail weed and we will have alcohol being sold in corner stores soon there after.

Pot, alcohol and tobacco are drugs with proven or potential harmful effects. They need to be controlled. Look at the opioid addiction issues. Even doctors who swore an oath play a big role in the problems they cause.

I'm doubting there will be a roadside tester available to police before then.

I'm all for the legalization of pot. But not before proper controls are in place to hinder it becoming to common place. You cannot learn shyte when high. It must be kept out of schools as much as possible.

Not impossible to drive for 5 miles when high and not recall a single traffic light. Or lose concentration and miss turn. Which typically results in some last second unsafe lane change.

Legalize it, control it and tax it. Just like booze and smokes.

So what? That's how it's done in the U.S. Is our alcoholism rate really any higher than yours? (Serious question.)

Oh no not that, people could make money and get products they want!!

OH THE HORROR!!!

Why do you find opportunity to make a living so fucking offensive????

It's already common place smart guy!!

Outside of restricting minors....what the fuck controls do you need?

What controls do you think need to be put in place and why?

Considering some of the greatest academics and thinkers of all time were total potheads I'm fairly certain you're totally full of shit.

Well, there is some evidence -- inconclusive and requiring further research -- that pot use lowers the IQ of teenagers (but not of adults -- take up the habit after age 20 and at least it won't damage your brain).

Yes, and there is even better research that it also speeds up the brain activity and helps fight things like long list of degenerative neurological diseases.

And I said outside of minor restrictions.

Kids don't know shit and aren't allowed to make legal decisions so if they want cannabis they should have to ask their parents.

They are going to do it anyway.

Just like sex....might as well keep an eye on it and hopefully teach them how to not fuck their lives up in the process.
