Well, a bunch'a us ol' boys was sitting around last weekend after the A&M game and the talk got around to the legendary "establishment" near LaGrange, Texas so well documented in Playboy, a movie, and Broadway musical, the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. All of us guys seemed to know exactly where it was (and how to get there) but no one would admit (this was mixed company) being a client.
The Chicken Ranch, for you young'uns, was a well-known factor of the economic life of the area between Austin, Houston, and Bryan. The name comes from their reported practice during the Depression of accepting live chickens from area farmers in payment of their charges. Also known as Miss Edna's Boarding Home for Young Women, it was in business for decades until a crusading Houston television reporter questioned on the air why it hadn't been closed down. After all, it was illegal, wasn't it? That resulted in death threats for the reporter, a lot of support for Miss Edna and her friend Fayette County sheriff Jim Fluornoy, and a lot of frustrated males when it finally closed down in 1973, I think it was.
Since this was a pretty regional thing, I guess we ought to open it up to include fond memories of other "professional establishments" in your experience. Did you lose your virginity in one? Fall in love with your wife in one? I'm sure there are lots of such stories, and I'm looking forward to reading yours.
