Please read the entry I posted on Naoko's AVG disaster thread. It should be able to help you and save you a lot of dough and grief if you ever encounter any of these types of virus and total freeze problems.

The best way to prevent that, stay away from dubious websites and don't open attachments on your emails that promise riches or a bigger dick.

Any Linux live-disc will get you into your hard drive if Windblows screws up.

I can recommend "ADBLOCK PLUS" as an add-on for firefox.

Less chance of something nasty via an "advert".

Chrome also has a list of websites known to be malicious and will attempt to stop you from going there. You can override...at your own risk.

I've had Chrome display the red screen warning of a malicious website. If I didn't know the website I stayed away. If I did I took a chance that the report was false.

Better still, switch to Linux full time and avoid 99.999% of all viruses & other malware etc :D

You're preaching to the chore.

Actually I run a duel system. Linux on one drive, Windblows on another, and a third for just my files. Then I do regular backups on a thumb drive.

Yeah, I used to dual boot till they stopped supporting XP, that's when I dropped MS altogether. Win8 is a PITA with the UEFI boot, even Linux OSs that are supposed to be OK with UEFI didn't like it on my laptop so I just wiped it and did a legacy boot for my Mint 17.
