Real Life Navy

Hello Explaura...since I am located in Oregon also...thought maybe a comment would break the ice and elicit some response.

I was in the Navy and the Far East, a long time ago. The events your brother described didn't begin yesterday, but have been going on forever.

And there were sensitive guys like him also back then...feeling guilt over the existence of prostitution and such. And brutal guys back then also who were cruel and abusive to the girls. The Movie "Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen, also portrays such a scene.

It does come as a shock to many that life is cheap in Asia, people have been being bought and sold daily for hundreds of years in that region of the world. Quite different than western values on life, liberty and the value of life.

While it may be a hard lesson for your brother to learn, I think it is a useful education to realize that life in other parts of the world is very different from what we have.

Even the guilt he seems to express will fade with time and will, I think, eventually be a learning process, 'things one should not do', because they are wrong, immoral and leave you with rather more than a hangover.

The world is not an evil place, men are not evil and ugliness has always existed; one simply must learn how to deal with it and avoid it, if possible.

Blame your God if you are religious, or Nature if not, as the human sex drive demands satiation regardless and men alone in a far away place will seek solace and there have always been women willing to provide it.

Feel free, if you wish, to send this little blurb to him.

Not sure what to make of this letter. In summary, I would say that this would have to be his first trip from USA shores. He needs to open his eyes to the real pain in the world.

The longer version:
I live in Hong Kong and I will tell you what I do know about girls in bars. They are not on drugs, they are not alcoholics and they are not looking to rip people off. A working girl in HK is very different to a working girl in the US, UK, etc.

Judging by how drunk he was he couldn't realise if she was from mainland china, hong kong, japan, thailand or the philippines. Or a mixture of all - you can find girls also from ex-soviet union, columbia, chile, argentina and mongolia, but most are from the philippines or thailand. These girls are a lot smarter at this than any of the navy boys. Many only come to HK to work for a few weeks each year on a holiday visa, but they are expert at it.

They know how to push buttons to get money - it is what they do. Chances are she was specifically in town because there was a US navy ship in port (yes, I do know which ships were in port recently - and you can't miss all the guys in the bar district).

Women who work in this fashion are not looking to be saved or pitied, they are there because they know they can earn a decent amount of money in a short amount of time and help out their family. They like to get the guy drunk - makes him less agressive and non-performing in bed. They still know they will get paid. Yes, the do prefer a nice guy over a grub, but in the end it comes down to money.

Your brother should have a lot of other things on his mind, other than a girl who he gave money to in Hong Kong. Obviously he has never been to Manila - that is much sadder. And there are alot of people in the world, who are alot worse off than a girl in a bar in Hong Kong - look at Africa with AIDS and kids staving to death, etc. By the time he gets to his next port, I am sure he will have a bit better perspective on things. On his ship there are counsellors to talk to - he should open up to them and get things off his chest.

Good luck.

A great way to introduce your self to the AH, MidniteMelb, welcome and thank you for the 'reality bite' comment.

It was always thus.

First and Second World War veterans could have told similar stories.

Sailors in port for thousands of years have felt sorry for working girls. The working girls are professional at portraying themselves as victims, even if they are forced to act like that.

The last thing a man away from home wants is a purely commercial transaction. He wants the appearance of consensual sex with some emotional attachment - that is what he is sold.

But there is white slavery (which is a misnomer), right? I've nothing against legal, Nevada-style bordellos, but a lot of prostitution is run by pimps who treat their girls like shit. That's what upsets me.

Yes. A European Convention on people trading was signed today, giving those affected rights to be sheltered by the state while their status is established.

Whether the women are providing the service voluntarily or under duress, pretending emotional attachment is a required part of the trade.

Damn, that's a lot of acting....that much practice and they should head straight for Hollywood.....then again, it might not take much to fool a guy when he's half-drunk. ;)

But who can blame a sailor.......you're cramped on a ship and eager for some fun when you get some liberty. Reckon I should do my patriotic duty some time and relieve some of their tension.... ;) I love military types. They defend the country and look great in uniform. And that's equal opportunity. I'll do the servicewomen, too....not prostitution, of course. Just a pleasure.
