Real bad news for indy sellers and e-book market

I call it hyped up, over-reactive panic.

Dear Customer,

We recently announced that Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have agreed to terminate their commercial partnership. As a result, payments through your Microsoft account no longer supported. In addition, the NOOK App for Windows will from August 7, 2015 are no longer available outside the United States. This means that your NOOK content can no longer open on a Windows platform.

Our records indicate that you are outside the United States and that you are using your Microsoft account as a payment method in your NOOK App for Windows account. Therefore, you may be eligible for a refund from Microsoft for any purchases you have made with your Microsoft account.

The app didn't run and was causing problems, so they're closing it down. Period. They'll find another working solution to this.

God please, let it be so.

I was more concerned with the fact their sales were down by a huge amount than I am about the part about the App.

They would have folded three years ago if Microsoft didn't bail them out.

Anything above Windows 7 sucks. :( Not sure why they went "exclusive" with Windows. It's such a narrow market down there.

Because Microsoft dumped 350 million into them so they wouldn't go under.

A significant percentage of my sales come via B&N and some of those sales are international. They can't do this to me, I AM A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE! They told me that, if I got the diploma, stuff like this would never happen. They lied about a lot of other things, as well.

I don't know how much market share they have, but there are still Lulu, Smashwords, and no doubt a plethora of other options out there to keep Kindle honest.

True, but e-book sales fall under every little bit helps and like R Richard a large portion of my sales are B/N

why?

because unlike Apple and Kobo and the hypocrites at amazon B/N will sell any content as long as its 18 and over so they will carry incest etc...

I didn't realize that. But, if there is a market for something, someone will try to sell it. Hell, during prohibition, even making booze illegal didn't stop the market for it, since there was both a supply and a demand. Someone will pick up the slack.

Let's hope you are correct!

It's always bad news to see a major distributor maybe going down the tubes, but it's more of a bad news issue for authors who write content that is only accepted at a limited number of distribution sites (and thus bunch up all of their sales there). I'd hate to see B&N go, but I don't own a Nook and its only one of my distributors for what I write and sell. buyers at B&N can easily find other outlets for what I write. Of course the more distributors leaving the market, the fewer such options there will be. Just glad I don't write what only a few will market.
