WASHINGTON (AP) — Much of America is about to get the Arctic shivers.

Meteorologists are confidently forecasting frigid polar air will plunge south into the northern plains, Midwest and then the East Coast from next Tuesday through Thursday. The Midwest should see temperatures well below zero, with single digit lows in much of the East and freezing temperatures as far south as Atlanta, New Orleans and parts of Florida.

National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Kocin, an expert on winter storms, said it is a classic pattern of massive blasts of Arctic air hitting just about everyone east of the Rockies. He said it will rival last year's January Arctic outbreak that introduced the phrase "polar vortex" to America.

"This is going to be a big cold outbreak, pretty windy as well," Kocin said. "It's going to drive all the way down south."

The wind and cold could mean wind-chill factors that will make the temperature feel like 30 degrees below zero — 50 degrees below zero in Minneapolis and Chicago, said meteorologist Ryan Maue of the private Weather Bell Analytics. He called it "old-timer's type of cold."

We'll be back in the sunny 70s by Tuesday. We just had some lovely rain NYE that was snow up in the mountains. Great decoration from a respectful distance!

I have the NOAA page for my location come up when I boot. They've been forecasting it for for a few days and it seems to get worse each time. I also have a dog that doesn't seem to feel cold weather, that loves snow, and needs to go out every two or three hours. Time to add another layer to my outside clothes.

My knee is already starting to ache from it. Bleh, thank goodness for insulated overalls.

Cold Front in Michigan

The Arctic cold front has hit Michigan. Can all you AHer's in the area check in? Are you okay? Warm? Trapped in a snow bank?

No snow bank. The car doors are still frozen shut. Bitter cold and snowing most of the day.

I would rather associate with people who are into others than those who are so int themselves.

Today in Detroit it hit 11F degrees.

Oh well, it was 64F here in La La Land today. Now you know why I'm here and not in Detroit!

31 degrees in Central Virginia at midnight and the snows didn't quite reach down to us.

Close to that on this side of the state, too. Feels like three right now with another six inches of snow in the forecast for tonight.

I feel your shivers from here.

Stay warm Lady

Ten right now with a -5 windchill. A heat wave is coming in on Saturday . . . they forecast 16 for the high. ;)

Brrrr!

Supposed to reach 64F today and 63 on Saturday. I love La La Land.

I'm in San Francisco for a few days. Slightly warmer here than in your turf under the smogberry trees. I sweated today, stomping around the 'hoods. Those cold-weather reports are from a different world.

I hope it was clear and bright for you in 'Frisco. It's drag in the fog and dank.

Quite clear & bright in The City. Sometimes cool breezes in the shade but always fun in the sun. A good time for visiting 'hoods I haven't seen since I moved away, long ago.

Got about an inch or so of snow that stuck to the ground, temps went down to 0F and windchills got down around -17F

Over a foot of snow on the ground, with that much more predicted for today/tonight. The temperature now is a whopping 2 with the windchill at -20. Wind gusts to 50 MPH are making driving conditions dangerous.
